Modern Family is a mocumentary show (in a similar style to The Office: An American Workplace Seasons 1-3 [DVD] or Curb Your Enthusiasm: Complete HBO Seasons 1-6 [DVD]) created by Christopher Lloyd (Frasier - Series 1-11 - Complete [DVD] [1993]) and Steven Levitan (Just Shoot Me!: Seasons One and Two [DVD] [1998] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]) and it follows the families of Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill), his daughter Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen), and his son Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) who all live in Los Angeles. Claire is a homemaker mom in a traditional family, married to Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell); they have three children. Jay is married to a much younger woman, Gloria (Sofía Vergara), and is raising a pre-teen stepson. Mitchell and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) are a gay couple who have adopted a Vietnamese baby, Lily. The families meet for family functions, around the neighborhood, and cross-family bonding.

I caught this show on the off-chance (luckily it was the pilot too) and was instantly hooked - it is hilarious! As well as being side-splittingly funny, the show is also very realistic with everyday scenarios that could (and do) happen to anyone and everyone.

This is not your average run-of-the-mill American sitcom. Watch the pilot first episode and see how the characters are interwoven, I won't spoil it but it will surprise you.

There are 3 distinct micro families: one an older man with a young, beautiful second wife, a gay couple with a child and a couple with 3 kids. The dad in this family is generally the focal point of the humour, trying to be hip and funny but failing miserably.

The comedy is helped by a similar documentary style to The Office, ie looks to camera and people caught doing stuff they shouldn't, plus some interviews with the "documentary makers".

The script is very tight written, allowing all the characters to shine. My favourite character is the dad who gets in to crazy situations (eg when a bike he has bought gets stolen and he ends up in a pretty, young neighbours house). It is also bang up to date (at least when it was aired, even including an Ipad episode days before the official release.

Classic stuff well worth a second and third look.

Highly recomended.

I'm wary of comments like "this is the best comedy in years", but I will say this is one of the new comedies I've enjoyed most in recent years. It's not an outright mockumentary like The Office, but it's more in that direction that a straight sitcom like Friends.

The show centres around a retired father and his two grown up children and their families: Jay is the head of the family and married to a younger and hotter Colombian wife who has a child from her previous marriage; Claire is Jay's daughter and has three kids (popular, smart and stupid) and is married to a husband who tries too hard to be 'cool'; and Mitchell is Jay's gay son, who has recently adopted a baby daughter with his melodramatic husband Cameron.

The programme may be called Modern Family, and be focussed on an extreme version of the potential make-up of a family in the twenty-first century, but it riffs on all the dramas any family is likely to stumble upon across three generations, from kids growing up and parents trying to find the right balance between being friends with their children and being tough with them to divorce and remarriage.

I can't guarantee you'll love Modern Family as much as I do, but I'd urge you to do what you can to check out at least one episode as the whole season is of similar quality and style, so if you like one you'll most likely enjoy them all.

Really, this is one of the comedies I've most enjoyed in years.

This is a series (Seasons 1-4) I can watch again and again; I find it great comfort viewing, and it always makes me smile, even if my 'laugh-out-loud' phase is over. I'm still registering missed jokes, and for that reason I like to watch it with the subtitles on. I like the fact there is no audience laughter, and enjoy the characters sharing their thoughts directly with the camera from time to time, even an expressive look at the camera mid-scene speaks volumes! The cast are excellent; they just bounce off one another and I admire in particular the ability of the younger actors to appear so natural. But like Phil and Mitchell, I could do without 'Fizbo', the clown persona of the latter's partner, Cam.

This series has spoiled me for anything else, but I'd really like to find another show to rival it.
