Very please with the WD Green drives, although I question the speed of the Thunderbolt connection. I am a lover of Apple products and bought this EHDD to compliment my 2014 27" 5K iMac; I needed space and access/writing power when editing video. I was dubious about USB3 speeds, and purchased a Seagate USB3 3TB EHDD to deal with my Time Machine back-ups.

The WD My Book works fine. There is a little hum from the fan, but it extremely quiet - the quietest fan on an EHDD I have owned. The drives do go to sleep, buy that may be OSX telling them to go to sleep when they are not needed. However, the wake up extremely quickly and although I may be making a mountain out of a molehill, those in the know will understand the frustration of waiting for drives to wake up when they want to access their data quickly.

I ran some practical tests to compare with the write speed of the Seagate USB3 drive; none of those fancy digital speed tests, just plain and simple drag and drop - and wait. I can report that every file type and size - Word doc, PDF, JPEG, PSD, small video, large video and VERY large video files seemed to copy across from the iMac HDD to each respective external HDD in about the same time. I understand that some people out there may argue this fact, but it was tried and tested.

If I had known of the read/write speeds, I probably would not have gone for this Thunderbolt option *ALTHOUGH* one of the other reasons I bought this drive was to free-up USB ports (and expensive option, I know...)

Received from Amazon with a UK square pin plug and a thunderbolt cable. Plugged it in and followed the very simple set up followed by a full back up of my iMac. 185GB of data took about 90 minutes with no detectable effect on the performance of the computer whilst the back up was in progress. This includes Parallels and the Windows software I run on the virtual machine so far as I can see. I had previously been using an Airport Time Capsule which was painfully slow and made my computer run slow, hence the new purchase. Operation is very quiet. I am seriously impressed.

This drive comes with a Thunderbolt cable and features 2 x 4TB Western Digital Red 'NAS' drives. The earlier models shipped with Caviar Green drives which are awful, so I'm glad Western Digital upgraded to the Reds. The Reds are tailored for frequent access in NAS / Raid configurations and therefore are more reliable, which is reflected in the 3 year warranty (compared to 2 years for the Green drive).

I researched large desktop storage options for months and this is by far the best £ per TB option currently available. Other RAID 0 options from LaCie and G Tech are a lot more expensive and much noisier because of cooling fans.

This drive comes under criticism from storage experts because it uses 'slow' 5400rpm drives and the case is made of plastic instead of the more trendy aluminium. Honestly, who cares about plastic when the storage is this cheap. It's nicely constructed, almost silent and runs cool. Silence is more important than style. As for the 5400rpm drives, yes it's old technology but it's also reliable technology and that makes for a more reliable backup. If you want the fastest possible read and write speeds, you'll be wanting 7200rpm drives from rival products, but you'll be paying a lot more money.

Overall an excellent drive for someone who wants a lot of storage at a good price and isn't after the fastest read / write speeds.

In general it is a nice product, however there are couple of things to note, which I didn't expect:

1) the box is pretty dumb. There is no dedicated hardware RAID. It just presents the two disks and the management utility given by WD in fact sets up Apple's software raid solution. The same can be achieved with Disk Utility. That means RAID 1 (mirroring) will be CPU intensive.

2) It also means, that the drives cannot be encrypted (at least in RAID 1 mode) and that encrypted Time Machine backups are not supported either: http://community.wd.com/t5/External-Drives-for-Mac/My-Book-Thunderbolt-Duo-and-encrypted-Time-Machine-backup/td-p/812753

3) the Thunderbolt passthrough is not working without the unit being powered on (not even with Mini Displayport, which is just a few dedicated pins on the connector)

For this price tag I would say it is not worth it as a secure backup device, I would chose the USB3.0 version instead. The reason I went with this, that my Mac doesn't have USB3.0, but the fact that encryption is not supported basically renders the device useless for me.

UPDATE 1: after 2 months of daily usage the supplied Thunderbolt cable already started to act funny. It frequently disconnects the device. Ordered new a cable and hopefully that fixes the problem. It didn't, the backplane of the device had the connectors loose.

UPDATE 2: starting with El Capitan it seems like turning on encryption will be possible, but haven't tried myself given the amount of data I store on the device. Well, checked it won't work out of the box at least not with Disk Utility.

UPDATE 3: also the plastic on the supplied cable broke after daily plugging/unplugging for 2 months.
