This 1998 production directed by Steve Norrington is finally released on Blu-ray in the U.K.; this 50 GB disc is encoded using MPEG-4 codec and is in full 1080p resolution with English DTS master audio 6.1, there is also Dolby 5.1 Russian, German, Italian and Spanish soundtracks along with Dolby Stereo Spanish, Portuguese, Czech and there are 13 sets of subtitles including English, German, Italian, Castilian Spanish, Dutch, Latin Spanish, Portuguese, Czech, Russian and Italian included in the extras are 5 featurettes which include La Magra, Designing Blade, The Origins of Blade, A Look at Dark Comics and The Blood Tide these are in standard definition, the original theatrical trailer is also included and is in standard definition also.

The first question to ask has the wait been worth it?

In my opinion it is a resounding yes this film has never looked or sounded better, I have owned this Film both on VHS and DVD and this latest incarnation on Blu-ray has made this comic book adaptation even more impressive.

The dark atmosphere of the movie is given more depth with the deeper blacks and brighter colours on Blu-ray and the battle scenes involving swords have a satisfying clang and scraping sound and the rat-tat-tat of the machine guns now leap out of the speakers as they rip across the scene along with the crunch of bones as Blade stomps and punches his opponents this brought to life by the thumping 6.1 soundtrack and the new cover art is also an improvement to the earlier DVD sleeve it is also the full 120 minute uncut version of the film...

As my review states this is an excellent blu-ray release. The picture is incredible with the image looking very sharp and clean without losing any of the atmosphere. The extras look to be the same as the UK DVD release and the audio is an English DTS-HD Master 6.1 track.
Most important for those of you in the UK this disc is Region Free - but, beware....be sure to buy the June 2012 release. This is the USA release. The Canadian release from a few years ago is region locked! The same applies to Blade 2 and Blade Trinity.
Definitely worth the upgrade to blu-ray and still one of the best vampire movies ever!

I watched this movie when it was originally released and really enjoyed it although it seemed to take a slight bashing from critics at the time. The film is roughly based on a Marvel comics character of the same name but make no mistakes people this is not spiderman.
The story is about a half human half vampire called blade with the help of his frien and mentor Whislter the hunt down and destroy vampires. These are not the type of vampires from old type movies these vampires are powerful and influential and are in control of many things like the poilce for example. The main villian in this the first installement is Decan Frost a young vampire who plans to take over the vampire world which in his opinion is to sympathetic to there human counterparts.
The special effects are good perhaps a little dated by today's standards but good none the less Snipes has the cold calm Blade down to a tee and has no remorse over his actions and his numerous ways of dealing with the vampires lead to some stunning effect shots.
The Blu Ray transfer itself is clear and crisp even though it is a dark movie(vampires what would you expect)the quality of the transfer shows every detail. The sound is also top notch and this is ilustrated perfectly in the opening club scene.
In closing Blade is awsome the ultimate vampire hunter and as I sit here I realize one other movie where Blade would have been extremly useful. When a vampire takes a human into the woods and stands there shimmering and showing off to his girlfriend it would have been good to see snipes sword in hand putting an end to the whole franchise from the start. But back to Blade I cant think of anything bad to say about the movie. Its a little light on features but thats fine with me I think this is probably the role I shall remember Wesley Snipes for more then anything. If you want an edgy fast paced movie this could be for you.

Blade is a great action movie with a good story and characters. It follows the story of Blade who is a Dhampir, a hybrid between man and a vampire as he hunts down vampires to protect humanity. The film has good action, good story with a nice look at the vampire culture that it has set up and it has good music. Blade is played by a black man called Wesley Snipes who has become somewhat of a favourite movie star for me.I heard about the film from my father for years before I finely got a chance to see it. The film looks great in blu- ray.

I already consider the first Blade the best of the lot, but the cheap bluray release only strenghtens it. With great pic quality and nice sounds it should be a must buy dark action/vampire movie fans.

Comic book hero brought to the screen, with all the style and humour of the original. Wesley snipes plays the vampire/human hybrid and "good guy", cooly slicing (mainly) his way through the vampire hordes, in search of peace, redemption and vengeance. Bloody, but with a comedic sense of style, it's a terrific and unusual vampire movie. Love the shades.

After just watching Matrix I was expecting another load of nonsense from this film. Another Sci-fi. However I was pleasantly suprised, and from that day on the original Blade has been and still is my all time fave film.

Wesley Snipes is simply brilliant in this, I've never seen a cooler character than Blade. From his cool sword moves to his funny sarcastic comments "You've met Mr Crispy at the Hospital, what do YOU think!".

In a way I think that Blade is slightly under-rated, however that's not necessarily a bad thing, who knows, if Blade had been more successful the sequels might not have been as good!

I've re-watched all Blade films to the point that I've learnt some russian sentences. And to anyone thinking of purchasing this film or all 3 films i strongly recommend that if you haven't seen it by now you really should!
