I am not much of a television fan, in fact I don't actually own one! Therefore I generally come across television classics by word-of-mouth and then go find out for myself what the fuss is all about. I also have a guilty secret of only really bothering with television shows which feature a gay character or storyline.

"Brothers and Sisters" came to my attention thanks to a rave review and interesting article in popular gay magazine Attitude. And since the series features a gay character (and it's great reviews) I decided to download the first episode to see what I thought.

And what I thought was- I must go out straight away and get the box set!

I am more than pleasently suprised to find that "Brothers and Sisters" is actually quite a remarkable, catchy and addictive drama series, which is warm, loving, humourous and a pleasure to watch. The series stands out largely because of it's fantastic storyline which unravels and develops in almost a murder mystery type fashion - it's marvolous to watch!

As the story develops and continues, the show promises viewers a fantastic ride which takes us deeper and deeper into the multilayered and interlinking stories found within this spectacular show.

The acting, I must confess, on behalf of the two leading ladies, does at first come off to be a little wooden- but I have warmed to this performance style and indeed also been quite taken by just about every character and their quirky ways. They are a fantastic portrayal of a large family, and it's really enjoyable to see the bonds between them all.

The show frequently also tugs on my heart strings, and I think this feeling could be universal- many episodes I find a tear coming to my eye, one or two had me sobbing!

This reviewer is incredibly biased, I'm sorry but anything with Sally Field in it just has to be good so I knew I would like this from the start. One of the many truisms of American cinema is "when Sally Field cries, America cries". Field is the formidable matriarch of a family that gives her plenty to cry about. Whether clashing with her conservative daughter Kitty or her smothering of youngest son Justin she plays her role -the liberal, opinionated, compassionate, Democratic feminist whose only job in life was wife and mother superbly.

But Field is just the head of an excellent (beautiful) cast. The show is witty and fast paced but what shines through is the depth of the characters, there is no tokenism here, all characters are inherently flawed, yet all incredibly human and likeable. This especially rings true for Kevin Walker, openly gay and yet his relationships, and his failure in those relationships in Season 1 are treated exactly the same as his straight brothers and sisters, no better or worse - merely human.

The show has been renewed for a 3rd season - here's to many more wonderful episodes.

This series is great American TV drama. It has classic family themes (fidelity, deception, honesty, humour, love) but also sweeping contemporary ones (war, politics, drugs, homosexuality) all wrapped together in delicious, glamorous, layered, entertainment. With a heartwarming core and beautiful packaging, I used to sit down every Sunday night knowing I was going to be transported to a glamorous sunny location and returned home afterwards, amused, moved and thoroughly entertained.

All the episodes can be enjoyed independently but hang together really well so very definitely worth buying the set. I recommend it!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first watched this program but being a fan of Desperate Housewives, and having seen Sally Field in films before I thought I would give it a chance. I certainly wasn't expecting what I saw though, it did not take long to get sucked in and I was pleasantly blown away with the whole story. Each character having their own storyline, and each as indepth as one another, everyone took to the spotlight so well. Every epsiode is full of laughter and tears. It was a treat to behold, unfortunately I didn't manage to catch the end of the series, so this is a must in my DVD collection. Well worth the watch!

This has to be one of my favourite shows on television. Every episode I find my self laughing then five minutes later on the verge of tears. It is a classical family drama with enough problems in one episode to fill a year but the magic is that is manages to do this without seeming unrealistic.

Major credit goes to the superb writers - every episode is full of wit and charm with plenty of emotional moments also. They bring together the best of the old and the best of the new, intelligently and seamlessly confronting the issues of homosexuality, the war in Iraq and infidelity.

Of course enormous credit is also due to the incredible cast! Sally Field is tremendous as the bossy yet unbelievably loving and caring mother. In addition, Calista Flockhart plays the witty, intelligent and loveable Kitty with warmth - a truly great actress - Rachel Griffiths and Matthew Rhys also deserve extra credit for the flawless accents and the humour/wit (especially from Rhys) that they bring to the show. Balthazar Getty, along with Dave Annable play Tommy and Justin Walker with such talent that they make it seem easy. These actors all have tremendous chemistry that they make the Walker family come alive.

Credit also to the 'additions to the family' - Ron Rifkin, Patricia Wettig, Sarah Jane Morris, Emily VanCamp, John Pyper-Ferguson and the amazingly talented two children, Kerris and Maxwell who play Paige and Cooper perfectly.

Finally a mention to Rob Lowe - an unbelievable actor who is heart-wrenchingly good looking and who came into the series as if he had been there from the start. The chemistry between himself and Calista Flockhart is magical and made me believe anyway, that after just one episode, Kitty and Robert were made for each-other!

Even if US Television hasn't always been your favourite, you must try this out. Don't let any form of prejudice stop you - my DVD collection would be missing something special without it.
