With eighties comedies they either inspire hatred or a perverse kind of enjoyment. There are so many criticisms that can be levelled at spies like us, however its inanity is its genius. Dan Ackroyd and chevy chase playing the same characters they played in the vast majority of films they appeared in form a slapstick likeable duo who are sent out as decoys to protect the genuine U.S agents who are deep in cold war Soviet Union. There are many hilarious moments in the film, such as when they attempt to cheat their way through an exam and also when they first arrive at the training camp. If you enjoy eighties comedies such as caddyshack, dragnet, or even airplane this is an essential purchase

The fact is you either hate Chevy Chase or you can put up with him. Where he is best is like in The Three Amigos playing the crass Dusty, National Lampoon's various outings and in this.

As many have said there are one or two really classic scenes - the exam scene is possibly one of the funniest of its type. The rest is a typical by the numbers 80s comedy but fun as it goes.

What did shock me a little was how poor the transfer was to DVD. Lots of 'sparkle' and grit on the picture, slightly fuzzy, but in the days of Blu Ray I suppose we are getting a bit spoiled especially when you can pick films up for under £3.

Written in 1981 by the ever funny Dave Thomas with John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd in mind Spies Like Us was put on the backburner after Belushi's sudden death. In 84 Dan Aykroyd dusted off Thomas's script and re-worked it a little with Chevy Chase in mind. Spies Like Us generated allot of enthusiasm before it's release, it was billed as an action comedy allot like Ghostbusters. But it failed to deliver upon it's release. The thing with Spies like us is that it's to clever a comedy. Allot of the jokes go over your head because there aimed at the military and government, if you don't understand the technical aspects the jokes seem flat. Ghostbusters used allot of technical words but they were fictitious and added to the humor of the movie. With Spies the use of real words for data and information made it flat and didn't give it a goofy side.
Both Chevy and Dan are really in character and perform to the best of there ability. The movie is full of cameo's, so if your a film buff you'd probably enjoy seeing famous directors and actors pop in and out. The first half of the movie is genuinely hilarious, but half was through the story gets to complicated and the jokes don't come as sharply as they had the first half. But all said Spies like us is a classic in my opinion and a movie you'd enjoy again and again. 4/5

A good solid vehicle for Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd and if you like them (I do) then an enjoyable film about 2 incompetents being sent on a dangerous mission as decoys. If you do not like them then there is not much more to it to recommend

A comedy from the time Chevy Chase was still an actor, not an adict on his ego. The duo works perfectly. A very good story joking with the surrealism of the times of the Cold War.
Cannot understand why was it so dificult to find this DVD.

If you enjoy the clueless slapstick of Chase and Ackroyd, you will love this film.
It is full of great scenes, notably the surgery done from a manual ("can you hurry it up a bit, I'm getting hungry"), the parachuting into Afghanistan and the constant slacker wisecracking of Chevy Chase ("I know the test backwards... I've taken it 3 times already").
Switch off the more critical faculties, and enjoy the film for what it is - honest 1980s cold war paranoia ridiculousness.

The film is a classic 80's comedy. Not quite as funny anymore in the 2010's but still fun.

The remaster, is a total disgrace. I have a VHS recorded from TV around 1993 which had great quality. So, I thought the Blu-Ray was gonna take me to the apex of delight. Not a chance. On some scenes, like the opening shot, the picture quality is good. Then somehow it varies throughout the film and is very dark at times, just like watching washed out VHS. I don't understand it, what went wrong? If you have a DVD, don't "upgrade" to Blu-Ray. It won't do anything for it at all.

Chevy Chase AND Dan Aykroyd! This should be great! Unfortunately, its a disappointing effort. Not really bad but we deserved much funnier.

My top 5 John Landis films:
1 An American Werewolf in London
2 Trading Places/Animal House (I cheated, needed to fit all these in)
3 Kentucky Fried Movie (I class this more as a ZAZ movie but it is directed by Landis, so fair is fair)
4 Into the Night
5 The Blues Brothers
