Product Description

The AA Solar Panel Car & Caravan Battery Charger is ideal for vehicles that are only occasionally used, or are only used for short journeys. It extends battery life by keeping the battery in a good state of charge through a trickle charge, topping up a 12V battery. It's handy size means that it can be left on the car dashboard while the car is not in use. A full 7-page user guide and quick start guide are included to giving easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions. The unit is maintenance free and will protect the battery against the discharge process that occurs naturally within a lead acid battery.

Car batteries should to be maintained at 12.4V to ensure sulfation does not occur; the number one cause of flat batteries and battery failure according to the AA Patrols team. The AA Car Battery Solar-Powered Charger will trickle charge and maintain a 12V vehicle battery whilst the vehicle is parked by converting light energy during daylight hours into 12 volts DC.

The AA Solar Charger is easy to install by plugging directly into the EOBD socket and is fitted with a flashing blue LED light to indicate charge. There is built-in discharge protection as well as reverse polarity protection to ensure that the charger will not overcharge your battery. The THINFILM technology allows a wider spectrum of natural light to be absorbed, meaning the unit can still generate electricity under low-light cloudy or winter conditions. This technology also enables the solar panel to handle the intense heat of the summer sun with little power loss due to the rising temperature.

Please note: the charger can only be used while the vehicle is parked and off. It is not waterproof and should not be left outside.

The AA Car Battery Solar Charger is suitable for use on petrol cars from 2001 onwards and diesel cars from 2004 onwards.

So far it seems to be doing what it says on the seller's page. Watch out when you extricate the solar panel from the plastic case inside the cardboard outer, as the staples may bite when pulling it apart. Fortunately, only a small amount of thumb blood was released.

First, connect the panel to the EOBD plug and with the ignition off, insert that into the EOBD socket in the car (if you don't know where it is, Google as I did with your car's details or refer to the handbook) and that's all you have to do. Unplug before turning on the ignition and starting the engine as subsequent problems with your car's electrics may make you wish you had, And that's it.

What is lacking is an easy to use, durable and protective case when the panel is not in use and is stored elsewhere such as the boot (most glove compartments won't take it). So I bought this sleeve, SwiftGaming Laptop Sleeve 15.6" Red Dragon, a steal at £3.99 and perfect for the job. The outer zipped pocket holds all the stuff that comes with the panel that you will want to keep together should you need it.

Very pleased with this bit of kit. Now that the battery has been charged to capacity (you need to do this first) by the unwieldy and heavy conventional mains charger which is now returned to the cupboard under the stairs, I expect that this neat trickle charger will keep it there.

Arrived as promised and well packaged. I was a little dubious about this item especially considering some of the less favourable reviews but for me this has solved a problem Ive been dealing with for ages. I don't use my car very often so little in fact that its difficult to justify owning one. I can easily go 3/4 weeks without even checking its still on the driveway which of course means most of the time the battery has gone flat but not since using this, so far I haven't needed to remove and charge it since getting this. If it helps anyone I have a 2011 Mazda 2 (small hatchback) but it has an integrated alarm, tracker and clock that of course need power all the time and this solar charger seems to keep the battery nicely charged all the time even though the car is generally in shade, it even seems to work when the car is covered in snow.

A SOLID BLUE LIGHT MEANS THE PANEL IS GETTING MAXIMUM SUNLIGHT.

FLASHING BLUE LIGHT MEANS REDUCED SUNLIGHT TO SOLAR PANEL.

Instructions in the box are out of date. I contacted The AA about this and they said the instructions are for an older version but they forgot to update there instructions.

If you email them they will send you the correct ones.

I bought this for my Mazda MX5 Mk3, as it goes several weeks at a time between use. I was having an issue with the battery running flat and then the car would not idle correctly. (If you have this issue with an MX5 Mk3, run the engine on idle for half an hour and the computer re-learns the best emissions point, then keep the battery charged). This solar charger keeps the battery topped up even in UK winter, outside of direct sunlight (car port). The computer socket allows everything to stay inside the car (no damaged seals) and charges when the car is off (i.e. not reliant on lighter socket). If you are leaving your car for extended periods between running, buy one, they work.

Not very effective for car battery

Bought to leave on my car when im not using it for a few weeks. The fitted obd plug is cheapo plastic and flexes all over the place when trying to plug it in on my volvo and doesnt seem to go right into the socket, not very reassuring. Theres an led which flashes when the panel is working, but that doesnt mean you have a connection and the battery is charging.
Anyway, the car battery still ran down so i measured the charging current and found it was about 60mA on a brightish uk day with the panel in direct sunlight. I’m going to guess that the alarm/immobiliser uses more than that, In other words this provides impractically small charge and doesnt help. Might be okay for smaller batteries with less draw in sunnier places but not much use to me unfortunately.

Very useful product if your car is to be left outside for a prolonged period. If it's in a covered garage a mains powered smart trickle charger is more useful. The fact that it utilises the vehicle's OBD2 connector is a very clever idea. Charger sits on dashboard tp ensure maximum light exposure through winscreen and no cables required to route outside to the battery terminals. Although cables with crocodile clips for this option are included too.
Four plastic "suckers" to protect your dash fit on the underside.
Blue l.e.d. to indicate whether charging and charge level. Flashing, o.k., continuous excellent.
