- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 January 2013Now, I know the majority of people are finding win8 not to their liking *clear understatement* but I am here, writing this review, to combat their efforts in making others bend to popular opinion and jump on the "we hate windows 8" bandwagon.
Windows 8 is a great OS. I have built myself a custom DESKTOP computer (note that I'm not using a laptop, a tablet or any other kind of touch screen device) and I love it.
Windows 8 boots pretty much instantly, imagine your win7 PC that you have left a while and its gone to sleep, you move your mouse and the screen flicks back on, that is how fast win8 boots on from when you press the on button, now this is on a brand new PC but I would bet older PCs will see a marked improvement too.
The new 'metro' start screen is a sticking point for many users who hate win8, at first I assumed this was because all these people were fuddy duddies that didn't know up from down and couldn't handle the slight change from win7 and then I realised that even some of my (arguably) intelligent friends felt the same way. In my opinion, the new start screen is not a problem, I still spend the vast majority of my time on the desktop (as you would expect) but have no issue clicking in the bottom left corner of the screen and opening programs from there, or flicking open the search to find some files, nothing wrong with it, simple and easy to use... just a little bit different from what some users are struggling to let go. Please note that any argument saying that the new metro is "ugly" and similar insults... and that that is a good reason to abandon windows 8 on its own, are in my opinion invalid, it is easy to customise, drag and drop tiles for programs, remove anything you don't want, change colours, much better than the standard 'one size fits all' feel of previous start menus.
Just a last little point, I am not, as most people would say any kind of win8 lover is, some kind of computer illiterate dummy who only uses the computer to browse the web, watch videos e.t.c. (no offence to anyone who just does those things - I don't think your a dummy :) ) I play the latest games, I use video and photo editing software, I use programs to make my life easier, and windows 8 just improves all that.
Windows 8 is my favourite operating system to date, I have more praises to sing but this review is dragging on as is, I am in no way a microsoft fanboy, they have made some terrible things... but windows 8 is not one of them.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 April 2013Having had/used Windows XP (32 Bit) for so many years, I didn't really want to upgrade my PC to a newer Windows version, as XP did/ran everything I wanted it to.
But I like change and wanted to try something better and since I wanted a 64bit OS for so long that was the perfect excuse to get myself a newer version of Windows. Having heard bad things about vista plus the fact its pretty outdated now I decided it wasn't going to be that. I was left with a choice between Windows 7 and 8.
Looking at reviews on 7 it did seem everyone loved it, I did hear from people that its Microsoft's best OS. Then looked at Win8 reviews and saw 50/50 split on what people thought. Having looked though the bad reviews on Windows 8 I saw that most of them were more on what people thought of the Metro Screen than actual faults of Windows 8 and to be honest which ever OS I got they would all have their faults.
Now I personally loved the look of the Metro Start Screen with its live tiles and customization options. It's basically the start menu from previous OS's but instead of a list of programs you have a customizable screen and beautiful tiles.
I did research 7 and 8 in depth and came to the choice of windows 8, as it could do all the desktop stuff from before + Neat metro apps, it had the metro start menu which I love the look of plus all the integration of other stuff like my XBL.
My OEM arrived it was time to say goodbye to good old XP, backed up my stuff and and Installed Windows 8.
And I am so glad I choose windows 8, like wow. It runs so smooth, the boot time is lightning fast!, like 8 seconds after bios screen.
All of my old programs have worked fine, had no problems setting stuff up or having to search around for tons of drivers for old devices.
(It's running World of Warcraft and Minecraft fine to, they two of my most used games)
Little about the system I have it running on:
4gb Ram
AMD Phenom ii x4 Quad Core Black Edition
1GB GDDR5 Graphics
ASUS M5A78L/USB Motherboard
Worth the upgrade? Oh yes, definitely.
Don't let the metro start menu put you off if that's not your kinda thing. Just keep yourself on the desktop as much as possible. Or just get use to the metro, you'll warm to it eventually.

Thomas GruberReviewed in Germany on 8 May 20145.0 out of 5 stars Bin sehr zufrieden.

PeteReviewed in France on 13 February 20131.0 out of 5 stars Cle illisible

josejuanReviewed in Spain on 10 September 20134.0 out of 5 stars Rápido y estable.
