Product description
The Almighty Johnsons is a New Zealand fantasy comedy/drama television series, which was created by James Griffin and Rachel Lang and is produced by South Pacific Pictures. It began airing its first season of ten episodes in New Zealand on February 8, 2011. The show follows a student named Axl Johnson, who on his 21st birthday discovers his family members are reincarnated Norse gods. The only problem is, they don't have full control of their powers and it is up to Axl (the reincarnation of Odin) to restore them and ensure the family's survival by finding the reincarnation of Odin's wife, Frigg. Matters are complicated by the presence of four antagonistic Norse goddesses who are trying to find Frigg before the Johnsons do to prevent the restoration of the gods' powers. Moreover, the Johnsons and the band of goddess rivals aren't the only Norse deities living in exile in New Zealand.

a) Too little of it!
b) Season 3 isn't available in the UK/Ireland
c) No soundtrack album.
d) That it isn't more widely heralded for the top notch series it is.
Certain characters drift out of it and their story arcs are left hanging. However, the series does reach a proper conclusion so its not like one of them American ones like Odyssey 5 that just conks out after a season or 2. If you liked Life on Mars, this is the sort of thing that it likely to appeal to you. Too many highlights to mention, but all the Johnsons are great, as is Zeb but a special shout out to Colin Gunnarson aka Loki, who steals every scene he is in.
It's plot heavy with a lot going on so it's worth getting the DVD and watching it in sequence from the first episode. Well written, charming and satisfying with great character development. The casting is perfect, an all round win.
4 Brothers descended from the Norse gods, gettting their powers on their 18th birthday. The youngest brother who just came into his power is the reincarnation of Odin. And if he completes a "quest", can cause all the other gods to ascend and become the gods that they once were instead of the very watered down versions they are currently.
I can't wait till Season 2 comes on sale.
Thoroughly entertaining and funny. Total contrast to the Thor franchise take on Norse Gods. Good to see such an alternative view.
No pressure then. Axl struggles between mortal longings and godly obligations - not helped by reincarnated goddesses determined to thwart.
Ten episodes, they at times a bit wobbly as though not quite sure how best to go. Some may regret the nudity and the swearing, but most are likely to warm to a good-natured series with a likeable cast and mischievous scripts. Episode 6 is a cracker, from that black comedy opener to the final shot of brother Ty's revenge on brother Anders, who once too often has pushed his luck (Anders the one who at times looks remarkably like a shrinking Daniel Craig).
Bonuses are modest - a brief summary of those Norse originals, a commentary on Episode 1 (this interestingly revealing how they tried to tackle problems of so much vital exposition and establishing the most appropriate mood).
Although this modest series will probably win no awards, it guarantees pleasure to those seeking to sit back and relax, entertained by something out of the ordinary.
I join all those hoping for a Season 2.
