I'm a little disappointed for nearly 200 notes.

Wonderfully solid construction, nice looks, good spec on paper and various VPN license are all great assets. No issues with network throughput, either.

As always seems to be the case when I buy Netgear, though, the firmware is a bit disappointing. In this case,
* the logging appears to be desperately bad, borderline useless
* at the time of writing there are 17 known issues yet no firmware update for 6+ months
* e-mail alerts/notifications are barely sent/useful
* traffic accounting is a welcome feature but cannot be applied to IP groups
* "Attack Checks" are very rudimentary
* GUI navigation is slow, and some pages take nearly 20sec to load
* Limited DNS control (you can proxy or pass through, but not specify overrides)
* Some very useful functions (such as traffic accounting and WAN bandwidth) are hidden away in a series 4+ subtle & different hyperlinks
* Only supports 3 schedules
* Session limits cannot be controlled per host
* Bandwidth management suddenly stopped working after several weeks, rendering traffic shaping useless until reboot

I'm left wondering if it was really worth the price tag.

Hi,
I would avoid this router. At the time of its launch it was perhaps innovative, but now with high broadband speeds (think BT Fibre at 80Mb/s), this unit cannot keep pace. The first unit they sent me didn't work at all, because the WAN port was faulty. When I plugged in the second unit, I found it almost impossible to permit web access to some HTTPS pages. Still haven't resolved if this is a problem with the router or our servers - all I can say is it works when I don't use the Netgear.

The setup web interface is astronomically slow. Expect to wait up to 5 seconds per page. Tech support say the web interface doesn't need to be fast since you don't use it often - fair point, but this is painful. Once you are in the layout is ok, but there is little to no inline guidance and I found it anything but simple to set up. For example, with port forwarding you would expect a 'service' that groups thing like HTTPS and HTTP. Nope. For SSH, I would expect to be able to add UDP and TCP at the same time. Nope. So you have to define each port forward individually - fine if things don't change, but if you want to move your web server to a different port, then it'll take you 30 minutes just reassigning ports. Furthermore they assign names to ports, but you cannot actually see what that port number is.

Looking at other reviews, suggests that unit would hang if it came under a DOS attack - can't confirm this. Reviewers also claimed throughput from WAN to LAN of 90Mb/s is unlikely if the router is doing anything else (i.e. serving traffic between two LAN ports). The reviews suggest 60Mb/s is the max, and that is certainly all we achieved doing an ISP test (we have 78 MB/s with a BT hub).

Most modern routers / switches also now have separate processors to handily web traffic against the switching, this doesn't - there is presumably a reason others do this!!

That said. Netgear technical support is fantastic. I can't fault the guys on the end of the phone, who really did go that extra mile to try to make this work for us. Its just a shame they have to work with dates equipment, which I believe was last updated in 2011.

I've been supporting this device for over 15 months now. Basically, we have 10 workstations, 14 laptops and 10-20 mobile phones routing traffic through it daily. We also have 2 x IPSec Site-Site VPN tunels with Cisco ASA devices.
Generally, it's pretty stable in terms of hardware. Though, it constantly keeps dropping Site-Site IPSec VPN connections for one tunnel to Rackspace. We never managed to get up and running the other tunnel with upgraded Cisco ASA to newer model. Rackspace support are excellent and highly qualifgied but we just couldn't get it to work with this router. The Firmware has not been updated for some time too. It feels like it's stuggling a bit with current workload so would probably recommend it for SMHO only. User interface is OK, not too bad although not very intuitive and some areas are under different sections which makes me always looking for them after a while of not using the UI.

I received the Netgear WN203 for review rather than the FVS318N. This wireless access point is targeted at small businesses and that's obvious from the moment you take it out of the box. Designed to be wall or desk mounted the status lights have been designed to be visible in both situations - there's a lip jutting out with the symbols for each LED indicator repeated in front of the LED, and when powered up, the LED actually helps illuminate the symbols. Nice touch.

In the box alongside the wireless access point you get a 12 volts (1 amp) power supply, a blue network cable, a desk stand for vertical mounting and pair of screws and raw plugs for wall mounting. All the packaging is recyclable.

On the rear panel alongside the power socket there are two network ports but don't be fooled - one is the network, the other is a console port. At each end of the back panel there is also an aerial socket to give improved performance; the aerials themselves are available separately.

So far things are looking good but be aware that this hardware only supports 2.4GHz channels and speeds up to N (300Mbps). On the other hand it does support power over ethernet and you can set up multiple SSIDs and VLANs to separate traffic. This device will support a maximum of 30 client devices and supports WEP, WPA and WPA2, as well as MAC address whitelisting, which is a feature I'd like to see as standard on all access points, personally.

All in all it's a great device. I had no problems integrating it with the rest of my business network where it has been on trial for a few weeks now, running two SSIDs to separate general network access from experimental smart devices.
