From virgin to grandmother, all the women in her city have conceived. One unexpected pregnancy is a drama; fifty thousand is citywide hysteria.
A lurking sorcerer drains power from the unnatural pregnancies, and Hiresha must track him by his magic. Unfortunately, her cultured education in enchantment ill-equips her to understand his spellcraft, which is decidedly less than proper. The only person uncivilized enough to help is the Lord of the Feast, a dangerous yet charming illusionist. Associating with him may imperil Hiresha’s city, yet refusing his help will allow the sorcerer to leech godlike power from the mass births.

The secondary characters I felt were not so fleshed out, but it did not detract from the experience at all.
The story was well put together and flowed naturally, starting out as a rather sinister mystery the twists and turns were both believable and fairly unexpected. The solution to the whodunnit is well foreshadowed; the clues were present but flew under my radar, when it was revealed it felt like the gradual solution of a puzzle rather than the simple presentation of an answer. The threat and fears of the protagonist feel real and lend weight to the final act of the story.
The world felt substantial and well imagined, the various types and mechanics of the few forms of magic with which we are presented show a great power that has limitations and comes at a cost, and once a rule was established it was generally stuck to. I'm always a fan of so-called hard magic systems, where magic is more a tool to be used rather than an arbitrary force that acts at the whim of the author.
All in all I was impressed with the writing style and quality and found the story to be captivating. I will definitely be looking to Marling's other work in the near future.
For a first time fantasy reader however I wouldn't recommend what can be a very heavy and occasionally plot thin piece - read it, sure, but don't expect it to be the most coherant of rides. Whilst the characters are beginning to show some human flavours, the 2D emotions left me a little irritated. I don't want to predict their actions! Nor do I want the same thought over and over again, I need in this size a book to get beyond the surface of their personalities.
Having said this I am a fantasy perfectionist, and if some of the 'and then she did this, and then that happened, oh and it was hot' repitition was sliced out and the world explored a little more, this could be an author to watch. There is massive scope for original plot lines, the fear element was nicely handled, and I am looking forward to another delve into this curious place.
Last week I read Brood of Bones and was delighted. The lead character is beautifully flawed and whilst it seems that Marling does his best to make the reader despair of her unfortunate lack of tact and terrible timing one can't help but grow to love her.
The story is like no other fantasy that I have encountered, it is a mixture of thriller, mystery, horror and costume drama which is full of surprises from start to finish. All in all a very pleasant surprise which I hear will soon have a sequel. I can't wait!
I also feel a little guilty that I didn't pay this time.......
Seemingly condemned to a life of eternal drowsiness, Enchantress Hiresha faces a dangerous challenge when all the women in her city fall pregnant. It's this simple premise that leads the reader into a subtle tale of cat and mouse with a few twists in the tale.
Different types of magic, rituals and beliefs in a world that conjures up images of ancient magic, traditions and exotic places sets a wonderful precedent for Marling to really develop the world Hiresha inhabits into something that could be truly epic and richly recognised.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who not only loves fantasy but is keen to discover something new.
I came across this author on Twitter, and after he tweeted that part of one of his books was available for download free (Gravity's Revenge), I decided to take up the offer.
I loved the little snippet of Gravity's revenge that I read, and I was absolutely gutted when I'd finished it. I therefore (unsurprisingly) picked up Brood of Bones.
The author is right (surprise eh?), Brood of Bones is a lot darker than Gravity's Reveng. We are introduced to Enchantress Hiresha, and her curse, the story is set and we are taken on a non-stop ride of hope, fear, panic..the list goes on.
This is a fabulous story, very well written, and I'm surprised Mr Marling is still an indie author....maybe that's his choice (I after all have no experience in this field!). There's nothing slow about this book, no unnecessary waffling. It's a great read, and I will without a doubt be picking up the rest of Gravity's Revenge, and his other titles.
Go out and buy!!
