Hurrah for the Raggy Dolls!

When I received the first two DVDs in this ongoing release I was a little disapointed. Those 26 episodes, which comprised the first 2 series, animated single-handed by Roy Evans, and which had previously been the only episodes available on VHS, appeared rather soft focus on the DVD and had been transferred in the US fashion to 30-frames per second from 25 fps. This results in the dissolving in and out of overlapping frames - a double image effect which is less noticable in live action but very disturbing in animation because of the hard black outlines.

This would appear to have been because of the unavailability of the original masters for series 1 & 2, because on this DVD - Raggy Dolls series 3 - we have the first of the Mark Mason/Orchid Productions series and here they obviously had access to master copies: the image is beautifully sharp and the animation is a clean frame-for-frame transfer.

The Raggy Doll stories, written and narrated by Neil Innes, are gentle and charming - but full of real human insight. The Dolls can bicker, argue and sulk like any group of seven people, and Mr Grimes' attempts to keep his Toy Factory in production despite bills, cancelled orders and forgetful canteen ladies are a wistful reminder of the decline of British industry. (If only real companies had had the Raggy Dolls working behind the scenes to help them out!)

i used to watch the raggy dolls when i was little so this dvd is great as it's not been replayed on tv and I enjoyed it so much. the is nothing i dislike, it arrived quickly, undamaged and get to watch again
