Never Mind The Horrocks

Well, that was disappointing...

I liked the original series as a child and my daughter enjoys the books now, so this DVD seemed like an easy and obvious move. I avoided one of the other collections because the reviews mentioned that Jane Horrocks was the narrator rather than the original narrator. Unfortunately she's on this one too.

Now I'm sure she's good to her nan and all, but Ms Horrocks ruins this. I'm already (PAINFULLY) aware of her work on 'Fifi and the Flowertots' though I'd liked to have thought her name didn't strike fear into my artistic taste buds as such. Until now. Her work here is incredibly annoying. Some examples:

Spot has an extremely high voice. Weirdly so. Not even like a girl. Like a really tiny girl pretending to be a really, really, really tiny girl. He's several registers below Helen, who IS a girl. (Ok, she's a girl hippo, but still. I found it confusing and I'm 36. And three quarters. I don't think it's simplistic or recherché to expect that three year olds can tell someone's gender from their diction.)

Spot's mum, Sally, is unbelievably posh. Call me Leon Trotsky but I didn't imagine her as a lady who lunches. (Albeit mainly because she's a canine but the point stands.) She's like Hyacinth Bucket on qaaludes.

Spot's dad, Sam, sounds like a truculent Victorian workhouse owner. I keep expecting him to backhand someone and laugh his monocle off and into an open sewer. He sounds like he eats orphans for breakfast.

Steve the alligator is on a whole other level. I'm not even joking. Show your granny some footage of Janet Street Porter on YouTube. Ply her with port and offer her two Rothman's in quick succession while the footage plays. Then get her to do an impression. Tell her she's not trying hard enough. Repeat for six hours. That's Steve. Steve will haunt my dreams, if I ever sleep again. I no longer want to talk about Steve.

And to top it all off, the playful (and more than a little out of tune, but endearingly so) theme song is gone, to be replaced by some wishy washy twaddle. It sounds frivolous but I've just heard it eighteen times, once every five minutes.

In short, GIVE ME MY SPOT BACK. Not the one on my shoulder, the other one.

I bought this for my little girl who is 20 months and she loves it and now watches it everyday as she loves now knowing all the characters and she has her favourite ones to watch! Highly recommend it for kids who are not interested in tv as she wasn't and still isn't but it keeps her occupied for a few mins at a time, its great because they are short!

It's Spot. I don't really remember much of spot, only that he was cute and he went on little adventures.
My 1 year old wasn't particularly impressed - but then he is teething and he was hungry at the time so.... will try again!

I do remember the theme tune and this one is different. I don't know why original theme tunes have to be messed with - this one doesn't even sound modern - it's just different, and worse. I liked "Spot, Spot, loveable Spot!" [...]

The actual DVD is fine - these are the original Spot programmes - but, unfortunately, the sound track has been updated. It no longer has the original narrator (who was much better) & music in between each video that my granddaughter loves. She is definitely not captivated in the way she was with my old video.

I bought this dvd for my 2 year old son as he loves the Spot books and I was bored of watching the same old dvd box set over and over!

My son loves this dvd too and watches it most days. He laughs out loud at the puppy's antics. A friend commented that it always soothed their son.

One word of warning though - my son has a very active imagination and gets a bit frightened by the hippo hiding in the piano and the cat snarling at Spot. So I always watch with him and reassure him. I'm sure most children would be fine though, as it is really innocuous.

This dvd is great value because you get a lot of episodes for the money.
