"Stunning Colourisation"

Truthfully I was never a big fan of colourising but then I'm of that generation that remember studios proudly trotting out classic black & white films with badly added colour. Characters in the foreground looked very unnaturally "painted" while backgrounds offered murky dull browns.

Technology has clearly moved on a very great deal. This version of Space General looks as if it was made that way with warm natural colours and I think colour references taken from colour photos of the puppet cast. It all looks real, never dull or garish. This is as good as the best Police Box Show colourisations and frankly better than some of them. If the technology used for this was cheap enough the whole lot could be colourised and have a renewed life on TV again, enjoying periodic repeat screenings as Thunderbirds et all have.

Space General is not the most typical of Fireball episodes. They tended to be about Steve Zodiac and Venus off on patrol or answering distress calls in Fireball XL5. They would encounter strange aliens. If you're familiar with Stingray but not this , it's a sort of Stingray in Space, although it came 1st.
Space General features a look at what it would be like if supporting character Lt 90 was put in command of Space City and is quite heavy on humour e.g. he puts gruff Commander Zero in his place. It's a fun if slightly silly episode. I'm not sure but a bit may have been cut as it was suggested in magazines etc. that the postman in the episode is a reuse of the Mike Mercury puppet from Supercar but I did not see the postman.

While there's no feature on the colourisation we do get an extended version of "A Wonderland of Stardust", the Fireball XL5 documentary. After a brief history of supermarionation from "Four Feather Falls" to "Supercar" ; we are into Fireball, where the name came from, the puppet and vehicle designs, where the unsual take off sequence came from and of course, music, writing and voice artists.
The interviewees include both Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, the wonderfull David Graham and some disrector , puppetreers and designers. sopeaking of Mr Graham, he can still do Prof Matt Matic, the Lazoon and Lt 90. A sequence compares his voices to the originals he did and they sound exactly the same (*1).
There are fascinating facts that I certainly didn't know; the very different original concepts for Fireball such as; "Supercar in Space", and ideas that were later used for Secret service & Joe 90.
Find out how near Don Spencer's end theme came to charting and how you make temporary puppet heads.

There's an episode of "Four Feather Falls" to round off the disc which is a pitched little younger than standard Anderson shows (and at 15 minutes a lot shorter) but not without its charm. the puppets are a little cruder but if you remember the western style milky bar kid adverts in the 70's , it's not unlike them.

Well worth it if you can get the disc under a tenner. Though if you're planning to get the Fireball boxset then the colourised ep and documentary are on it.

(*1) at a Dr Who signing Mr Graham was asked to do a link for an internet site as Brains and took us all back decades with an exact recreation of his famous character. ASahem he only got to do Parker for the new version.

Third in the fabulous 1950s Series

This Video contains 4 episodes of the Black and White Series Space Patrol. Each volume has a different character from the series on its spine located at the top.
This one has Professor Matthew "Matt" Matic, ship's designer, engineer, navigator and scientist of XL5 (voiced by David Graham) depicted.
The rest would feature Steve Zodiac (Dr) Venus, Robert the Robot,Lieutenant Ninety( the Assistant Space City Controller) and the commander and others. The Cassette totals 99 minutes meaning each episode is 25 mins long. When they were shown on commercial Tv there would have been 5 minutes of adverts totalling the half hour slot.
(On a lighter note some American half hour shows come in at at just 22 mins)
It should be noted that the episodes recorded and transmitted were not in the same order as the episodes so this issue has the first 4 by ITC.
The episodes on the VHS are

10. Flying Zodiac
11. XL5 to H2O
12. A Spy in Space

Interesting Fact..
Although I did not know it at the time of the original broadcasts David Graham spoke his words in the style in a voice similar to the actor Walter Brennan. American as Coca Cola and Hotdogs.
I've shown extracts to my Y6 classes as history lessons to show what attitudes were like in the 1960s and not one of them commented on the fact that they were in monochrome!
I myself first saw them on a Rediffusion 9 inch black and white set in October 1962 No ariel on the house it was cabled in. So we really were ahead of our times even then!!

Amazing transformation

The colourisation process is incredibly well done and I would never have known it came from a B&W source. It was a real treat to see the world of Fireball XL5 come to life in colour in crisp detail. Besides the main feature, there's Four feather falls and a superb documentary of the story behind the creation of Fireball XL5.

If you have an intrest in Fireball XL5, this blu-ray is fantastic and a bargain at the current price. Highly recommended.

Great to see a colourized episode on Blu-ray! (Not just on 2009 DVD Boxset of Fireball XL5)

All I could say about A Day In The Life Of A Space General (Colourized Episode) on Blu-ray Disc is really good thing to enjoy. (Not just if you want to replace your 2003 DVD Boxset with the 2009 DVD Boxset of Fireball XL5)

The Entire Colourized Episode seems really well, except some fault is the scene where Lieutenant 90 shouts "Commander Zero! What have I done?" as two scenes between Lieutenant's Whining and XL5's Crashed down to the ground were transferred in a wrong direction... I dont know why. :P (Same thing happened in 2009 DVD Boxset)

Along with Four Feathers Falls Episode (Gun Fight on Main Street) has HD Quality seems fine too aswell as a Documentary from the 2009 DVD Boxset too. (Only in SD)

Also the menu seems good as we see Earth, Stars and the Moon as seen in the ending credits. (but in the interactive way)

Yes, I was wallowing in it as I watched this beautifully restored and coloured episode of Fireball XL5. Ideal if you just want to remind yourself what it was like without shelling out on the complete series boxset.
