Product description

A collection of five classic Ealing comedies. 'Kind Hearts and Coronets' (1949) is a period comedy set in the early 20th century. Young Louis Mazzini (Dennis Price) vows to take revenge on his family, the D'Ascoynes, when he learns how they disinherited his mother. Working his way into their trust, Louis begins to bump off his distant relatives (all played by Alec Guinness) one by one, but complications set in when Edith D'Ascoyne (Valerie Hobson), the widow of his first victim, falls in love with him. In 'The Ladykillers' (1955), eccentric landlady Mrs Wilberforce (Katie Johnson) believes her new lodger Professor Marcus (Guinness) and his associates the Major (Cecil Parker), Louis (Herbert Lom), Harry (Peter Sellers) and One-Round (Danny Green) to be amateur musicians. They are in fact, however, the perpetrators of a bank heist, looking to whisk their ill-gotten gains out of London. All goes well until Mrs Wilberforce is persuaded by Marcus to claim his 'trunk' from the station; it is only then that the criminal genius's carefully laid plans begin to go awry. In 'The Man in The White Suit' (1951), Sidney Stratton (Guiness) is a laboratory cleaner in a textile factory who invents a material that will neither wear out nor become dirty. Initially hailed as a great discovery, Sidney's astonishing invention is suffocated by the management when they realise that if it never wears out, people will only ever have to purchase one suit of clothing. In 'Passport to Pimlico' (1949), an unexploded bomb goes off in Pimlico, uncovering documents which reveal that this part of London in fact belongs to Burgundy in France. An automonous state is set up in a spirit of optimism, but the petty squabbles of everyday life soon shatter the Utopian vision of a non-restrictive nation. Finally, in 'The Lavender Hill Mob' (1951), nobody would ever suspect gold bullion delivery man Henry Holland (Guinness) of anything other than total devotion to his job. However, with the aid of fellow lodger Pendlebury (Stanley Holloway), he gathers together a gang to carry out a heist, intending to smuggle the gold out of the country by melting it down into miniature models of the Eiffel Tower. All goes well until the consignment of models becomes muddled up with another, non-golden batch. Watch out for an early cameo by Audrey Hepburn.

    Lovely films

I had been looking for just one film, but comparing the prices it made sense to buy the box set and receive five films.
The dvd arrived promptly, was well packaged, and a good price.
I read some of the previous reviews of this item, the main theme seemed to be one of lack of clarity on the sound and speech on some of the films, I found no problems whatsoever, speech was clear and precise, and sound quality good as were the quality of the films in general considering their age.
I think the problem might be one of diction, we speak somewhat differently to how we did some years ago and younger people seem to struggle with this aspect somewhat. I was bought up in an era when correct pronunciation was most important and so understood all that was said in the films perfectly..
All in all I would heartily recommend this set, some great classic films which I have throughly enjoyed watching.

If you are a fan of the Ealing Studios films, this is a boxed set not to miss. Four of the best films to come from Ealing studios in a value box. Unbeatable value and entertainment that will will enjoy for life. There is no point in commenting on the films themselves, they are timeless masterpieces that can be enjoyed by people of any age.

My suggestion is, buy this set, in fact, buy two at least, then you have a wonderful Christmas or birthday gift, or just a gift for any occassion in your possession.

The Best of Ealing Box Set (DVD) is exactly that - all the films included are classic British comedies. Alec Guiness is wonderful in each of the films as are the supporting casts. The only caveat - particularly for younger viewers used to the broad comedy and lol syle of humor that characterizes American comedies - of the past 30 - 40 years, or even older viewers partial to the Marx Bros, WC Fields, etc. or the great screwball comedies of the late 30s-40s - is the very dry British sense of humor, which induces a knowing smile rather than a belly laugh

They're all there - all your dad's fave's from when you were a kid and they were being shown on BBC2 in black and white. Plenty of laughs to be had. Lady Killers is my particular favourite. Its a Britain that has vanished - but you can still get a feel of it through these classics. THis boxed set very good value for money. No problems with quality of picture or sound.

Having watched The Ladykillers for the first time in goodness-knows-how-long on TV recently, I was reminded how brilliant, clever, funny, entertaining, clean, witty (and thought-provoking) the films from the Ealing Comedy era were (and still are) - especially the talents of the late, great Sir Alec Guinness (pre-Star Wars Obi Wan Kenobi) who was the original Father Brown (before Kenneth Moore and Mark Williams). I bought this collection of my favourite Ealing Comedies to save me waiting for ages until some television channel decides to show them again... and I can enjoy them whenever I like.

An excellent collection of some of the best of the Ealing Comedies: there are more that are not in this set, 'Whisky Galore' and the 'Titfield Thunderbolt' are two that come to mind. I was a little supprised to find that the set includes 'The Man in the White Suit' - not, I think, my first choice for a comedy, although there is an important message in the story. But for nostalgia, these films bring back the memories of times past and a cinema full of laughter !
