Love this movie. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is mine. Ginger Rogers at her most beautiful in gorgeous costumes and hair styles, and the acting is pretty good too. Not strickley true to the story of Dolly Maddison, but then it was made in 1940's Hollywood, but it does make you curious to find out more about this first lady of the American Presidents. Give it a try.

History be damned, Gingers Rogers was an amazing actress. In my opinion the best ever.

As a Ginger Rogers fan I have to say that the film is great. The Blu-ray picture and sound are good. The concern I wish to raise that this Blu-ray is Region A and, therefore, cannot be played on the vast majority of blu-ray players in this country. This seems to be that same with all Olive Films blu-ray releases. Fortunately, I recently purchased a multi-region blu-ray player on Amazon.

Great film and the Arrow Academy release plays fine on a UK bluray

In Philadelphia, a young widow (Ginger Rogers) and her mother (Peggy Wood, THE SOUND OF MUSIC) take in boarders to make ends meet. Two of their boarders are James Madison (Burgess Meredith) and Aaron Burr (David Niven) and the young widow's involvement with them will change American history. What starts out as an entertaining highly fictionalized historical romance becomes increasingly absurd. Historically, there's no evidence whatsoever that Dolly Madison was ever Aaron Burr's lover before her marriage to James Madison. One can accept that as a piece of dramatic license but when Rogers as Dolly Madison gives a rousing speech on the courthouse steps to prevent the angry crowd from lynching Burr, historical accuracy be damned and it just becomes too ludicrous. The screenplay is by Irving Stone, who would go on to write two well documented biographies LUST FOR LIFE on Vincent Van Gogh and AGONY AND THE ECSTASY on Michelangelo but his writing here is pure fiction, neatly eliminating Madison's son from her first marriage completely. The director Frank Borzage does well enough with the material at hand though without any particular commitment. With Stephen McNally and Frances E. Williams.

The Olive R1 release is a nice B&W transfer in its original 1.37 aspect ratio.

Big disappointment, this DVD did not function on my multi region player, had to return for refund

I liked this movie, Ginger Rogers looks great, David Niven plays an American Baddie. It’s only gets 4 stars because of a few major mistakes from the real story. Good quality picture for a 1946 movie. This is for the Blu-ray version released by Arrow Academy. It has English subtitles if required.

I am a collector of Ginger Rogers movies and in Magnificent Doll she to my mind is the consummate actor and is the pivot of this historical drama. I was pleased with the narrative and wholly entertained by it.

Had this earlier on DVD (still do!), but was curious to see what the Blu-ray treatment would do for this bio-pic. Yes, the upgrade is definitely worth it!! Many of us who study the artistry of Ginger Rogers consider this film to show her at her highest level of mature beauty and the Blu-ray only increases this perception. The crispness of the Blu-ray shows off art and costume design brilliantly, very much enhancing my enjoyment of this romantic treatment of Dolley Madison's life and times. If you are going to acquire this film, it is very much worth it to get the Blu-ray version!

Having had a lifelong crush on Ginger Rogers, I have no idea how this film slipped by me all these years. It is great fun, Ginger is her usual charming self, and I have always had a soft spot for Burgess Meredith. Add to that a charmingly caddish David Niven as Aaron Burr and you have the ingredients for a fun cinematic evening.
