An essential piece of kit for any one looking to keep their hair tidy from the neck up

I purchased this to trim up the back of my neck in between barber visits as my hair grows quite quickly. I've had this hair trimmer for around a year now and it's still working perfectly fine. The build feels sturdy, it cuts through my hair with ease and is comfortable on the skin. I haven't used any of the combs or guards, so can't comment on these, but for £12 you can't really go wrong. An essential piece of kit for any one looking to keep their hair tidy from the neck up. 4 stars.

Wahl Performer 5537-217 Battery Operated Hair cliper!? Well, not quite of a performer!

I bought this item because my old AA batery powered Babilist died after 6-7 years of faitful service. Although I read some negative reviews about it, I decided to take the risk and see what happens, it is not very expensive product it won't be a huge loss.
In my case the 'mashine' started immedietly after I put the bateries in the very narow copartment, so: so far so good (but do pay attention how to instal them, there is a specific order to do it). Then I decided to chek the attachments and the problems started:
1. There is no clear grade #, it is a bit of a gess which one what will do and how much it will cut.
2. It is very difficult to attach them on and take them off which resulted in breaking one of the cutting tooth.
3. Next day I decided to use it and see how it will perform. It did not start, so I recharged the batteries to be
sure that they will have enough power (although they were fuly charged), oiled it and did a second atempt -
succses! This thing is a bit loud, a bit louder then my old Babilist, but I can live with it. Comparing the
performance however is different story. Not that my old was something extraordinary, but I was expexting at
leas the same. I don't have much hair left on my head, so I keep it very short, so it usually takes
me about 15 min. to cut it (my old one was smaller with about half a centimeter and it had only one plastic grade
with 6 stages and I had to clean it quite often). This one did not cause me the same problems, but this thing is nowhere
near as sharp as my old one. I had to go over and over again to be sure that it will get the job done, not to mention that it
puled my hair couple of times. I had to change 3 of the grades until I was satisfied with the result, with my old one I
was using only #1 all the time. Then one set of batteries died (maybe it is the batteries), so I had to replace them with
new and pray that they will have enough juce to finish the job. It took me about 25 min! Maybe in time I'll get use to it
and the job will be done quicker and better (if it survive that long), but so far I'm not quite as hapy as with my old one.

Updates!!!

I was using this THING 3 times after I bougth it and when I decided to use it again it didn't start! It was clean and oiled, I've changed 2 sets of bateries, nothing helps, so it went in to the bin! I've noticed the first signs of the aproaching dead after the first use, but was hoping that it will last, well I was wrong, very wrong!

Will I recomend it? Defenetly NO, stay away, save you money, spend them for something better!

The item that arrived was not the item pictured, which was a disappointment as I was looking for an exact replacement for our previous trimmer. This model is the 5537N Groom Ease. However, it looks very similar to the 5537-217, other than it is black and not silver.

It looks like it will do the job, and comes with a storage stand that the previous model didn’t have. The reason we bought a new trimmer is because the battery compartment wasn’t great and eventually we couldn’t get the 2 AA batteries (not supplied) in at all. It does look like we’re going to have the same problem with this one, but as we are aware of this we’ll take extra care when replacing the batteries.

I would also warn that the item comes encased in that hideous plastic that you have to hack apart with a pair of scissors, and when you are finally able to get to the trimmer you’ve acquired at least two cuts from the sharp plastic.

I would hope to get the five years of good service we had from the previous trimmer.

I've had four of these over a 8 year period their life span is 2 years. The first two brilliant then the third one blades not as sharp then this one couldn't get the battery cover off due to bad fitting plastic had to lever it off prying it with blunt eating knife not the best situation... I'm traveling so couldn't return it. The plastics seem inferior now and just thrown together. I've lost a bit of faith in this product but its cheap and best of bad bunch as far as battery trimmers go. I guess they've changed manufacture process. Saves shaving just trim the stubble every few days in the Tropics. One I had to reassemble then it cut better.

Disappointed ! ... cutting blades on this WAHL seem poor, struggled to trim beard which took way too long to do the job (had a Bayliss trimmer before which was far far better), also the WAHL packaging was lethal ! ... CAUTION, the vacuum-packaging is very tough clear acetate which you need to cut with scissors leaving razor sharp edging to slice your hands to bits, should have used the packaging to trim my beard! - you've been warned !!!

Packaging - horrible. I feared I might lose a thumb or even a limb trying to get the clippers out of the nasty plastic packaging, which will now sit in landfill for ten million years.

Clippers - I previously had Wahl lithium rechargable ones. They lasted 2 years, which for £20 still works out lot cheaper than using Mach 16 ultra glidey six blade refillable.

All in all - fine. I also notice this product is #1 seller in "women's trimmers". Which brought tomind my fave line from Chaucer:

"Abak he stirte, and thoughte it was amys,
For wel he wiste a womman hath no berd.
He felte a thyng al rough and long yherd,
And seyde, "Fy! allas! what have I do?" "

Can be a tad sharp

When used without attachments, the stock blade can be pretty sharp so be aware.

The combs need some Grading numbering otherwise you're playing the guessing game so I rarely use these. For detailing I tend to use the stock trimming blade but I have somehow nicked myself a few times - something I've never managed with my current trimmer - the Wahl Sterling 2 Plus whose battery is on it's last legs sadly.

You get what you pay for here.
