Many people turn to a comforting cup of tea when we’re feeling anxious or stressed. This may be due to L-Theanine, an amino acid that is commonly found in green tea. It was discovered as a constituent of green tea in 1949 and in 1950 was isolated from gyokuro leaves. It is also the L-Theanine that provides a unique savory (umami) flavor to green tea infusions. As well as green tea, L-Theanine can also be found in black, and white teas from the Camellia sinensis plant.

L-Theanine is an amino acid. Amini acids are classified as the building blocks of protein and are needed in several internal functions of the body. They are generally classified as “essential” or “non-essential”, with essential amino acids meaning they cannot be manufactured by the body and must be supplied in the diet to maintain good all-round health.

L-Theanine however does not fall within either the essential or non-essential categories because it is not common in the diet and cannot be made by the body. It has a chemical structure similar to a neurotransmitter type of amino acid, glutamine, which naturally occurs in the body. L-Theanine is able to cross the blood brain barrier and can influence brain wave activity.

This was recommended to me as my husband was under quite a lot of pressure and neither of us were sleeping well. We take one in the morning and one in the evening and have both felt a lot calmer and slept between 6-8 hours a night and feel quite refreshed on waking. It also seems to work on a digestive level too and keep everything moving. There don't appear to be any side effects and I believe it's very supportive of the adrenal glands which can become exhausted with stress- since the adrenals, walnut sized glands on top of the kidneys, are involved in every bodily function from brain, to liver, heart, hormones etc and we wouldn't survive without them, it's good to know this supplement is helping keep them healthy. There is a lot written about adrenal fatigue and it's part in the rise of obesity( being stuck in famine/survival mode) and many ot the diseases of the last 100 years, so I was very pleased to find this supplement which we've been taking for 2 months and as well as the above, it seems to have helped to stabilise my husbands blood pressure at a safe level

I had a particularly stressful time following an illness and searched for everything and anything I could that was as natural as possible to help. I tried these to help with symptoms of anxiety and panic. They are not an instant hit however after two weeks of taking one twice a day (one in morning and one early evening) I did feel a level of calmness and the physical symptoms of anxiety and panic lessened. I had combined this with CBT and hypnotherapy as the tablets won't work on their own, but I did feel the physiological impact of them. If I take any now I just take one in the morning as L Theanine may impact sleep. I found these incredibly useful. If you are uncomfortable buying these from unknown sellers online then Holland and Barrett sell them.

I bought this after reading a lot of very positive reviews here and elsewhere. When it arrived I took 2 capsules and it gave me a headache so I reduced my following doses to just one capsule and haven't had a headache since. The big benefit came when I changed the way I took it. I read online that some people empty the capsule under their tongue and let the powder dissolve there. The amino acid is water soluble and as it dissolves the underside of your tongue absorbs it and it gets into the blood stream much quicker. I tried this and it definitely works better. I feel the effects much faster and the effect of just one capsule is more than enough to keep my anxiety away for 4hours or so. I also don't need to worry about taking it on an empty stomach. I take one before I go to work in the morning and combined with the caffeine in a strong coffee I am focussed, calm and productive. Can't recommend these enough.

I trust this brand having been buying Solgar vitamins and supplements for twenty years now.

L-Theanine is a supplement I began to use about a year, having been recommended as help to realx, and especially if feeling anxious.
I have found it to be really helpful.
I will happily swallow 1 or 2 tabs when I feel I need to.
At the same time I don't need it every day.
i also like to take it if I am finding it difficult to relax at bedtime.

I heard a lot about how thianine helps you calm. And as I have used Solgar before I opted to buy this one. Even after taking 3 tabs I didn’t feel much, on my first day I felt little calmer but it lasted for May be 1/2-1 hour. It’s expensive compared to the effects. Definitely won’t buy again and recommend .

L-Theanine is excellent for shock, anxiety and stress. I'm a singer songwriter and have used it up to a few days before gigs as it calms the nerves! It's also really helped my daughter is she's been upset, instantly calms. You can empty a capsule under your tongue for it to work immediately and calm a situation. Great stuff!
