I remember watching Fireman Sam when I was little and I had at least one video of it. At the start of this year during my nostalgic phase, I scoured this website for any of the original shows on DVD. I was going to buy Action Stations, Norman's Tricky Day and Spot of Bother until I saw this collection. It includes both Norman's Tricky Day and Spot of Bother as well as Treasure Hunt and Rich and Famous.

What I like best about this series is that it was made in Wales (where I grew up), the characters speak with Welsh accents (with the exception of Bella, who speaks with an Italian accent and Station Officer Steele, who speaks with an English accent), there is a sense of humour that occasionally crops up (mostly involving Norman and his tricky antics) and there is also a fire safety theme throughout but it especially features strongly in Safe With Sam.

There are a few cons I have to make about this collection though. Although the box cover shows three of the original puppets, it also shows the more recent logo. Despite most of the episodes being arranged in the right order, they are somewhat inconsistently placed on the discs (for example, Dilys's Forgetful Day is a series 3 episode but is the last episode featured on Treasure Hunt, which mostly consists of series 2 episodes). The disk that sticks out the most is Norman's Tricky Day. Camping was originally broadcast before Lost Cat and on this DVD, they are arranged the other way around! Also you have to wait a good few episodes until you get to see the title episode unless you choose it from the episode selection. The Fireman Sam logo at the end of the opening sequence has changed. Instead of Sam posing with his thumb up being cut out and moved onto a pale blue background with the original logo, a see-through blue sheet covers Sam with his thumb up and a different logo is shown.

Apart from the cons of this collection, the series is a wonderful trip down memory lane (in spite of not seeing all episodes when I was little) and is much better than the recent CGI series. 4/5.

Cassic Fireman Sam The Hero Next Door!

Classic Fireman Sam! So glad I found this little gem, puts the modern CGI series to shame! John Alderton dose an excellent performance for all the characters, especially Dilys Price! The stop motion animation give the show charm and the characters a certain sole. Its great for kids on teaching fire safety and what to do in an emergency. So do yourselves and your kids a favour, get this classic series and enjoy the classic stories of this famous fireman. After all, he is the Hero next door.

Superb, Superb, Superb!!!!

This is a real delight to watch - wether you're a tiny tot like my kid or an ageing adult like me! John Alderton's narration is superior to any of the later remakes and the models used give the characters movement and tactile qualities that the animated later series couldn't achieve. As he was an excellent and accomplished actor, John's narration is full of emotion and depth and he voices all the characters with differences for each of them. I would give this 10 stars if I could and I wish the TV production companies would return this version to the children's channels rather than the more recent adaptions. Fireman Sam is projected as a human being doing a hard job as a fireman whilst being informative to child viewers but later ones show him as a flawless, rigid, character who just preaches to kids and they subsequently turn off to any message being given.

Oldies really are the best

I never actuallly watched Fireman Sam as a child. While browsing the internet one day i came across it and watched some clips online and got hooked! The old series is by far the best produced, with the animation quality being high even taking into account the time it was recorded. The storys have clear message behind them in safety with enough humor to amuse even adults from time to time. Since there are no new complete series available to purchess it was great to find this product on amazon and well worth the money. Definitly one to keep for the kids of the future!!!

I've loved this show since I was very young, and to be able to buy this entire classic series on DVD is very rare find. This is a must buy for those who really enjoyed the characters and the message behind each episode. Not only is it something you can show your kids, but it'll bring back so many memories. A must have! Keep in mind you'll need to have a DVD player that is able to read region 2 DVDs if you live in North America. Aside from that set back, an absolute must in any DVD collection.
