A national treasure

Beatrix Potter's stories were favourites of my children when they were growing up in the 1970's, so when they began to produce grandchildren I bought the VHS versions of this collection, and was astounded by the production values reflected in the adaptation of the stories to video. As two of my grandchildren are still under 6, and the VHS player has bitten the dust, I bought the DVD version, and was very pleased to find that apart from a couple of minor alterations, the DVDs are as good or better than the original VHS versions.
The videos were originally commissioned by Coates, Beatrix Potter's publisher; the dialogue sticks as closely as possible to the original text, and the animated characters are closely based on the original illustrations in the books. The effect is to enable the original story line to shine clearly through the new medium without inhibiting the watcher's imagination. This series was a true labour of love.
For me, and, I suspect, for many people, the piece de resistance is "The Tailor of Gloucester", From the initial cameo of a Victorian Christmas Eve, to the poor tailor's illness, "worn to a ravelling", to the old nursery rhymes, and the magical denouement, this video is a small masterpiece.

A real treat to find the original series of Peter Rabbit and friends with the live action introduction. I bought the set as much for myself as for my toddler, my other children used to video these when they were on originally.

Could not be better presented

This is a really lovely collection of Beatrix Potter animated stories narrated by Niamh Cusack as Beatrix Potter. The beginning of each one has the scene set perfectly by Niamh as Beatrix filmed on location at Hilltop, in the Lake District, Beatrix Potter's home. It takes you into a gentle, relaxed period of time created by her, and a specially English setting. My favourite tale is The Tailor of Gloucester, it has all the magic of Christmas Eve, more than any other Christmas dvd I have - and I have many! Perfect for adults and children alike.

Beautiful series, I adored this as a child and bought this DVD collection for my children as a break from constant CG Dreamworks/Disney/Pixar nonsense. Just as lovely as I remembered - the theme/opening song has stayed with me forever!
