Gorgeous

Wonderful stuff. Beautiful animation that sticks very closely to the original stories. This first volume covers most of 'The Finn Family Moomintroll' (you'll need to buy Vol 2 for the last 6 episodes of that story).

Although it was broadcast in the '80s (in the UK, at least), the style of the production is *very* 70s, possibly even 60s. It just has that look and feel to it. If you're a fan of the childrens' animations from that era (Bagpuss, Clangers, Hector's House etc), you'll probably appreciate this. Only the title music of the English language version says "80s".

The picture quality is about the same as I remember it being on its original broadcast, ie good if ever-so-slightly fuzzy. I strongly recommend checking out the German language version as well - the picture quality there is *fantastic* - super-sharp - and there is significantly more material. The music is different, too, sounding at times like the sort of thing you'd hear in a 1970s documentary about a nudist colony.

The only thing I found to annoy me is the way the narrator plays Snufkin as a hippy, like Dylan in the Magic Roundabout. Oh, and he plays a flute instead of a mouth organ. Those minor niggle aside, I'd strongly recommend this both to fans of animation and fans of the original Moomin books.

Beautifully haunting animation

This is the original, stop-motion fuzzy-felt series that was Polish made and broadcast in the UK in the 1980s. The Moomins, based on Tove Jansson's wonderful Finnish books sticks very close to the source material in terms of look and tone. Richard Murdoch's gentle narration and almost-three-dimensional depiction of life for the titular Moomins in the woods and forests of Moominvalley has an almost spooky, dream-like feel to it. All the favourites are here, Moominpapa, Moominmama, Moomintroll, the Snork Maiden, Sniff and Snuffkin. Haunting and surreal, with some parts even scary, especially with appearances of characters such as the Groke and the Hemulens. A memorable flute theme tune makes this a must buy for nostalgia lovers and children alike.

Old Magic - Haunting

Moomins arrived this morning, just been checking them out - it's the original series, as it was, not the later cartoon animated series (which in some ways I prefer, as it's not a narrative). But the older version has so much more magic. The theme tune is quite haunting.

The DVD contains German and English audio versions (the German versions are the original uncut versions and as such run quite a bit longer), the German episodes have optional English subtitles, and vice versa.

It appears to be unrestored, but the copy is a good one and certainly brings back very fond memories. I can imagine some young children finding it quite eerie at times.

Just as eery as I remembered from my childhood

At last we can relive the original Moomins series from the early 1980s. If you remember seeing it when you were young, the atmosphere and theme music should bring back many fond memories from your youth.
