Back in the day...

...when kids programmes were witty, clever, ironic and appealing on more than one level.

Most people aged between in their late 30s or early 40s will remember the theme tune of this funny and quirky series. The plot revolves around two warring factions, the Byegones who live in Cloppa Castle and have discovered oil, and the Hasbeenes who want the oil. The two do battle every day, stopping only at 3 o'clock to share tea. Comparisons can be drawn to recent US foreign policy but I believe that the original concept was a swipe at Cold War politics.

Watching this with my kids I was struck by how sophisticated the humour was back in the 1980s compared to today's kids offerings, most of which are formulaic and shallow, and imported from the US. This far outweighs the lack of sophistication in the production which is charmingly simplistic although the tapes could have done with a clean up before being transferred to disc.

The product itself comprises 2 discs with all 52 episodes, each of which are about 5 minutes long, and a few extras with the creators, producers and director. According to the box the run time is 576 minutes, although I've not made it that far through yet, so there's plenty to keep you and your kids entertained if they can put up with the lack of slick production and sfx.

In my opinion this was a great series and deserves to withstand the test of time. Sadly, however, I fear the kids of today my find it a bit old fashioned. Still, worth trying it on them, you'll enjoy it even if they don't.

Overall 4 stars, loses one for poor quality of transfer to DVD.

Cult classic Kids TV

Until I bought this DVD last year, I had real problems finding anything out about this show which I'd watched and enjoyed as a child. Watching it now as a 30 something I can appreciate the hidden innuendo and subtly sarcastic scripting. Can't believe they had the nerve to model the jester on Ken Dodd, the likeness is remarkable! The effeminate prince is also a nice touch. Pure nostalgia!!

Too good just for children

Faded memories of watching this in 1978 when I was four caused me to buy this DVD. I used to think it was the cleverest show on TV because the program would end with the ATV sign-off, and, just when you thought it was finished, you'd get a 10 second reprise.
The marionette characters are endearing, and the dialog is witty, if not terribly P.C. The producers acknowledge that they really wanted to make a grown-up program..."Where's my battle axe? She's right here, Sire". What childrens TV program today would quote from Shakespeare, use words like "conflagration"?
The producers once worked for Gerry Anderson at Century 21, but the characters seem to have a different feel to say, Captain Scarlet. There is a "featurette" on the DVD with behind-the-scenes shots and interviews.
Buy it, for you or your kids, and you won't stop singing the theme tune.

Some things should not be brought to dvd

If you go down to Cloppa Castle, be prepared to want to leave immediately...

This is one of those things that I guess you might say oh that seemed really good when I was 4 but you watch it now and say, all is forgiven Tweenies. I am not old enough to remember it but in line with other 70s puppet shows and classic tv bought on offer and subject it can't be that bad, I'd give it a go.

I simply find it amazing the people responsible for the Stingray and Thunderbird models are cited as also for these as there is no comparrison. perhaps it is lost in the dvd transfer which incidentally is terrible and looks like a really badly over used vhs quality as it is, but you just can't see any resemblance. I would be left thinking this was in the post glory days or what happens in the 70s but other things have been done so much so successfully.

I didn't personally like the programme anyway, it doesn't seem "crazy" or anything special, it's pretty boring.

Seems to have a cult folowing or rest on the back of its associations only. If looking for anything in the same line then consider this your last option only as it's really dire and mine will be in my local charity shop shortly.
