A Technicolor Television Treat!

Midway between 'Yellow Submarine' and the murals that one can imagine decorating the interior of the Biba boutique, the look of 'Crystal Tipps and Alistair' is so rooted in time and place that the passing of the years has merely enhanced its psychedelic nursery charm. Reminiscent of Terry Gilliam's Python work at times, the animation was apparently undertaken by the same team that made the memorable 'Charley Says' public information films. Virtually miniature silent movies, each five-minute episode is beautifully simplistic and eccentric in a way that British children's series of the early 70s so often seem in retrospect. Viewing them 40 years on is a delight and tinged with a little melancholy over the loss of the sedate innocence of magical little shows like this.

Seventies Strangeness Through and Through ...

Unique children's animated television series about a funny Girl with Big Hair who lives in an idyllic house with her best friend, a dog, and soon a giant butterfly and bird join in the fun too. It recalls a lost, albeit psychedelic, innocence and charm that somehow could only have been produced in this era. The stories are not voiced but the action is accompanied by jolly incidental music played on what sounds like harpsichord and oboe maybe, certainly has a kind of classical feel without being stuffy. It used to be on at teatime after school, and the episodes only last a few minutes each. It is of its time but still entertaining, particularly nowadays to younger children from 4 or 5 upwards who will probably enjoy the simple storylines and colourful visuals as much as us 40 somethings do!! Worth buying either for a trip down memory lane or a first look back at the roots of eccentric children's television...

On DVD at last! Great!

I saw Crystal Tipps and Alistair for the first time in the nineties and enjoyed it then, but I am enjoying the DVD even more.

There is no dialogue, (not a bad thing) just music to accompany the
adventures of the girl and her dog, and the bird and butterfly that they hatch out of an egg and a cocoon respectively in the first two episodes.

I believe it was originally made in the sixties and the artwork showing the bright pyschedelic colours brings to mind the Yellow Submarine movie by The Beatles and all flower power artwork of that period.

Each episode is very short but as this two DVD set contains the complete series and there are a lot of episodes it is very good value indeed.

A cult classic not to be missed. Fab and groovy! A very happy vibe.
