BOUGHT JUST FOR THE PIED PIPER.A TRUE STORY TO THIS DAY,STUDIED BY PHILOSPHERS AND SCHOLARS.HAMLIN(OR IN GERMAN Hameln_.the storie of hamlin ,overun with rats,a deal is made wwith the town council and the piper to rid the town of rats..his deed done the council betrays him on his deal and so the piper taks revenge by luring the children of hamlin to koppenburg hill (a real moutain) where adoorway was seen to open and shut as the last child entered.a sought after dvd.very well recommended.look aafter the dvd its growing in price and the story is known worldwide.

Excellent Production

From being a child, I've always found the story of the Pied Piper quite intriguing and I find all the different theories quite interesting, but being me, I prefer the magical, slightly macabre version found in the original fairy-tale.

I vaguely remember watching this version on television when I was smaller and I was thoroughly delighted to find it was available on DVD. The dark medieval setting, the 'quirkiness' of the motion-dolls and the sympathetic narration of Robert Browning's poem (performed by Robert Hardy) bring this rather regretful fairy-tale to life in a way that can't be described as anything but perfect.

It's about half an hour long, but everything you need is there. There is no script except for the poem, no voice actors apart from Robert Hardy's narration and the character's don't interract with dialogue. It is simply a puppet-show that illustrates every word of the poem. From the setting, the plague of rats and the music right down to the Piper's mysterious eyes, every detail has been attended. Yes, the production itself is quite simple, but it doesn't need to be anything else - it doesn't need anything fancy, it doesn't need big proud speeches and special effects - if it had anything else, it would spoil the entire thing.

I think some more sensitive younger children might be a little unnerved either by the events that unfold or even the style of animation - the puppets/dolls, scenery etc - as it does look a little macabre at times and can perhaps distract viewers from the production itself, but overall a very very charming production which captures the whole melancholy, but very much-loved story in a truly wonderful way.

As I brought this DVD just for The Pied Piper, I took 'The Reluctant Dragon' as an added bonus. And it was a very good bonus. It is presented in a similar way to The Pied Piper - through stop-motion and voice overs, but it's not as tragic or dark as the Pied Piper - in fact in places, it's comical. An interesting take on the traditional legend of St George and the Dragon.

I am ashamed to admit that I couldn't say who the voice/s is/were. I'm inclined to think there were maybe two as the characters tend to have their own way of speak - but don't hold me to that. The animation isn't, in my opinion, as carefully put together as Pied Piper, but I don't think it really needs to be. It's really quite simple, with smaller sets and nothing as intricate as, say, the Mayor's Court in Hamelin. Even so, it's a wonderful production of a short, comical tale. I think children of all ages would enjoy it and older people - particularly stop-motion fanatics - would appreciate the work that went into it.

Wonderful stop-motion animation

Being a stop-motion animation nut I obviously prefer Cosgrove Hall's classic puppetry output to their drawn (cartoon) animation, and this is a another fine example of this rather rare (these days, anyway) artform. This execution of the famous tale of the Pied Piper is nothing short of brilliant, well, it's perfect in every detail. It's scary, it's funny, it's beautiful, it's all those things that make a great puppetfilm for children. And I do say children, because when this film was made (1980) nobody seemed to mind showing children a bit of horror in fairytales as opposed to today where kids get pampered with tame eye candy and superficial gloss. You didn't talk down to children in those days like you do now, TV makers didn't shy away from more adult themes and heavy dialogue. This animation film is a perfect example, the dialogue is delivered in poem form and it didn't seem to matter that smaller children probably didn't understand much of it they would still enjoy it. Today you have to understand everything in order to enjoy it - or so the TV makers think, thus robbing kids now of some wonderful and magical TV experiences. The narration is a chapter all to itself, the great Robert Hardy shows his enormous range and I have quite frankly never heard a puppetfilm narration as excellent and exquisite as this one. Of course it also helps that I'm a big fan of his but this truly is an amazing achievement, I wonder if he was acknowledged for it at the time. Why don't they make family entertainment as carefully detailed like this anymore ? Watching television really was a whole different experience 20+ years ago, and this glorious puppetfilm will take you back to a time sadly long gone when they knew how to make it right. Hopefully more classic Cosgrove Hall puppetry will be released. Buy it now, it's on both DVD and VHS and highly recommended !
