Évocation de la vie du roi Louis II de Bavière, mécène de Wagner, romantique exalté, bâtisseur de châteaux incroyables, amateur d'art... mais victime d'un décalage terrible entre ce qu'il doit paraître et ce qu'il est. Ludwig s'invente des mondes imaginaires, en marge de l'Histoire et du Temps, et se rêve monarque d'un royaume dominé par l'Art et le Beau dans lequel il se réfugie, alors qu'autour de lui l'incompréhension et l'hypocrisie font rage. Histoire en or pour Visconti, que celle de ce tragique anti-héros, mélange d'Emma Bovary et de Don Quichotte, dont la prétendue folie, toujours mise en doute, semble n'être qu'un rempart contre un monde qui lui fait peur...

Ce film d'une beauté crépusculaire est bercé par la lancinante musique orchestrale de "Lohengrin" et de "Tristan et Yseult" de Wagner -héros auquel s'identifiait le souverain. Elle accompagne comme un leitmotiv sa descente aux enfers. Le film révèle Helmut Berger, présence hallucinante et hallucinée, et permet à Romy Schneider, superbe et poignante Elisabeth d'Autriche, de prendre sa revanche sur "Sissi".

Le personnage de Louis II de Bavière apparaît constamment torturé par ses sentiments et ses désirs homosexuels refoulés, son histrionisme envers les domestiques et les acteurs masculins, sa relation ambigüe envers Wagner, sa passion incestueuse pour sa cousine Élisabeth d'Autriche, l'impériale (c'est le cas de le dire) Romy Schneider. Tant l'actrice que le personnage qu'elle incarne souffrirent de la même instabilité affective et des mêmes frustrations que Louis II de Bavière, et toutes deux connurent une fin tragique. Visconti l'avait-il pressenti ???

Histoire de la chute du "plus beau roi d'Europe" et de la fin d'une Bavière indépendante, "Ludwig" est un monument qui reprend le titre de la dernière journée du Ring, "Le Crépuscule des dieux". On y voit le roi errer dans l'immensité de ses palais vides, seul avec sa folie, définitivement seul, alors qu'il était resté très populaire. Un dernière scène onirique achève le rêve wagnérien : c'est un soir d'hiver, le carrosse du roi fuit dans la plaine enneigée, au rythme effréné des chevaux blancs, accompagné de la musique mélancolique de l'une des "Scènes d'enfants" de Schumann (un compositeur qui, lui aussi, a sombré dans la folie...encore une "coïncidence" Viscontienne?) . Puis vient l'épisode final, la mystérieuse noyade dans le lac de Starnberg en compagnie du psychologue qui le suivait. Aujourd'hui, l'endroit est marqué par une grande croix de bois.

Le générique de fin se déroule sur un gros plan du visage du défunt monarque, enfin apaisé.

NB: Le DVD est d'excellente qualité, mais on regrettera l'absence d'une version audio allemande: On a le choix entre VF et VO italienne sous titrée ... Il existe bien un Blu ray allemand avec langue et sous titres allemands, mais, si l'on en croit les critiques et les avis des acheteurs outre Rhin, d'une qualité médiocre (image passable, mais son catastrophique, parfois désynchronisé, avec un souffle important).

Ah, Ludwig! Greatly imaginative, unique series.

'Ludwig' is the soul of Beethoven, who takes the form of an ovoid crystalized jewel and who haunts a woodland glade where he plays his music on his violin and helps the wood's inhabitants, the birds and animals who reside there.

Actually that is my interpretation, because the truth is that the question remains:
What is Ludwig?

In this series he is a crystalline egg that 'grows' arms and legs and plays the violin, and also in fact can grow just about anything from out of himself, including helicopter rotors!

A weird, bizarre, and delightfully surealistic series that I just love!
Everything about it appeals to me, the strangeness and uniqueness of it, the woodland setting, the bird called Magpie who is nothing like a real magpie as he is bright blue! The oddness of the watcher in the woods, with the deerstalker hat, and permanantly observing Ludwig through a large pair of binoculars, and as he does so, he is telling us what Ludwig is doing. After he has asked the question, that is, seemingly of himself, of "What is Ludwig doing today?" or somesuch similarity of questioning, then proceeds to relate to us all that Ludwig is doing.

This is a series that probably wouldn't, or couldn't, be made today. Todays paranoid society with its culture of suspicion would most likely see the anonymous watcher in the woods with the binoculars as something to be feared and treated as highly suspect, and certainly not an image they would want propagated as being seen as 'innocent' in a children's tv series, as we all know that anyone who stands around in woods with binoculars observing anything at all, is really just a potential pervert out to prey on young children , who must always be suspicious and wary of anyone in a wood watching anything through binoculars! Today's audiences may well see the innocent narrator as the boogeyman. Such a shame if that really is the case, as facetiosness aside, it would be no surprise to find this is one of the motives behind not giving this wonderful series a new, bright, happy release onto the DVD market.

One can only speculate as to why superb series like this one, and the wonderful Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings are still to get the DVD releases they deserve.
Anyway, this VFS tape is still worthwhile purchasing if you have access to a video player. The cover is so bright and cheerful too, that one hopes they would use this again for any DVD release of Ludwig.

So.... What is Ludwig? Nobody knows. Maybe he really is the soul of Beethoven.

Delightful!

This is a gem (pun intended) of a tape of episodes from the 1970s British animated television series. We meet Ludwig, a kind of strange jewel-like mechanical thingy who can fly, make things, but above all play Beethoven on just about any musical instrument he mysteriously produces from inside himself. He has charming adventures with his forest friends the mischevious magpie and his wife, the hedgehog family, squirrel and owl. All the time, a mysterious "watcher" in a deerstalker hat and matching cape looks on through his binoculars and makes witty (he thinks) remarks. Totally different, original, and delightful for 3-year-olds and up.

This was a great series, which I enjoyed as a teenager and still find it amusing as an adult. I was lucky enough to get the VHS copy but a DVD would be great. Hint, hint, to the producers.
