Product description

Synopsis

A tumour virus inadvertently present in polio and adenovirus vaccines between 1954 and 1960, SV40 was the subject of a workshop to discuss the questions posed by the recent detection of SV40 DNA in human tumours by polymerase chain reacions. The papers are presented here. The workshop was split into four speaker sessions: the presence of SV40 and SV40 DNA in human tissues; other human polyomaviruses; human exposure to SV40; and mechanisms of SV40 oncogenesis. The three panel-audience discussions consisted of issues relating to the detection of SV40 in human tissues, SV40 as a putative human commensal, and SV40 as an oncogenic virus and possible human pathogen. The text concluded that epidemiological data presented at the workshop indicated no increase in neoplastic diseases in humans exposed to SV40-contaminated polio vaccines. However, the consensus was that further initiatives should be implemented to resolve questions raised by this problem.
