One of the most famous non-fiction American books, Walden by Henry David Thoreau is the history of Thoreau's visit to Ralph Waldo Emerson's woodland retreat near Walden Pond. a timeless classic

Thoreau's 'Walden' is a beautifully written piece of American literature - describing the life and experiences of the author as he embarks on a year-long adventure: living a more simple, at-one-with-nature existence. Thoreau retreated from 'civilisation' and headed off to a remote woodland area, where he lived in a small cabin. It's here that he enjoys life at its fullest - without worrying about such things as money and bills, or keeping-up appearances. Thoreau lived by his own means - from fishing to picking fruit - and felt a new sense of freedom. He encourages other to pursue such an emancipated lifestyle - and presents this as a 'self-help' book.

If you are fascinated by the anarchist ideal of living separate from 'social order' (i.e. government by others), and the naturists ambition of relying on what the environment provides, then I highly recommend this book. Not only is the 'idea' a grand one, but the way Thoreau expresses himself is so eloquent as to make this book a timeless classic.

This was a beautiful book and something I had wanted to read for sometime, but had put off thinking it would be heavy going. It wasn't. I found myself pausing to reflect on many passages, and highlighted much that I might refer to it again later. An amazing read, something to savour.

Inspiring

For some reason I thought this would be more explorative than it is subjective. However in as much as it presents one man's thoughts and experience relating to one state, the arguments put make perfect, reasoned sense.

Thoreau's thoughts are as relevant today as in his day and to any state. The statement that leapt out to me - "A very few--as heroes, patriots, martyrs, reformers in the great sense, and men--serve the state with their consciences also, and so necessarily resist it for the most part; and they are commonly treated as enemies by it." - is certainly still very true. This is a very quotable work and one that still has the power to inspire subjects the world over.

Without being revolutionary, without inciting uprising, Thoreau sought to make a difference in his own sphere. He also experienced the futility of it when everyone around sought to ensure he did not fall foul of the state. I can't help but wonder what he would make of the Internet and the power it has brought to us to raise a united voice against injustice. I would imagine he'd embrace it and use it to great effect.

What Thoreau above all conveys is a wish for a peaceful end to injustice enforced upon the minority by the majority and when taken into account that the minority is very often several minorities which add up to a greater number than the so called majority, a difference could be made if each person in the minorities made but a small stand.

So very relevant to today's world. How nice it would be if one day we could look back and say "but that doesn't apply anymore".

Everything points to this being a great book. Thoreau is quoted in so many places as an expert in solitude. I found this book a non event, especially when I read that his home was only a mile or so from the village. He may have been self sufficient but he had more contact with the outside world than I do! This version includes other stories and, after reading all about his ideas on vegetarianism (which I support) I was shocked to read about his hunt to kill a baby moose. I gave up on the book at that point.

The master of iconoclastic idealism in his best. A beautiful description of the time Thoreau spent in Walden from where this book got its name. I accidentally came across him when I was watching the movie "Dead Poets Society". In the movie a group of students hide in a secret place in the woods reciting Thoreau.. the now famous passage "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived (p.97)". It was this sentence that triggered my interest in Thoreau who provides several beautiful and acute insights not only into his life but to all other lives that seek a different solitude.

The copy I purchased on 13 May 2016 from Amazon - ISBN 9 780393 930900 - is of perfect quality. I need it for my next OU course so was a bit worried but there are no problems with my copy. The book is roughly the size of a DVD box (but thicker, 688 pages). The text inside is fine and full copyright and publishing information is there as expected. Font sizes are as expected and both front and rear covers are fine.

(I'm guessing the other reviewer accidentally received some mutant, misprinted edition)

I found this book rather slow going - I understand it to be much more highly rated in US than here. I felt readers were being invited to view it as an account of a solitary, isolated way of life whereas in fact Thoreau had constructed his cabin on land belonging to a friend (Emerson) and had frequent contact with friends in the nearby town and those passing on (even closer) road. The observation of nature and wildlife in the surrounding woods is however first-rate and (to me) most enjoyable). But what mars it is the tone of self-satisfaction - almost smugness - in some parts. I think it's an important book to have read, especially given its significance for many American readers.
