Purchase options and add-ons

`This deceptively little book contains more truth and provides more insight into what it is like to have Asperger′s Syndrome than many a weighty tome on the subject. It offers a view from the inside, but it is not yet another autobiography. Admirably and refreshingly, the author has refrained from giving an account solely based on her own experiences. Instead she sets out observations from 25 different suffers, giving often astonishing and sometimes harrowing glimpses of what actually happens to a child with Asperger′s Syndrome in the classroom, in the playground, in the lunch queue and at home′ - The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry

This award-winning book illuminates what it means to be a person who has Aspergers Syndrome by providing a window into a unique and particular world. Drawing on her own experience of schooling, and that of a network of friends and correspondents who share her way of thinking and responding, Clare Sainsbury reminds us of the potential for harm which education holds for those who do not fit.

This book holds insights that take us beyond the standard guidance on how to manage autistic spectrum disorder. It challenges the way we might handle obsessional behaviour.

It invites us to celebrate the pure passion of the intellect, which such obsessions can represent, and to recognise the delight which can be experienced by children who love to collect. It reminds us that many of the autistic mannerisms we might try to suppress actually help the child to think.

This revised edition includes an additional introduction and extensive summary of research in the field of Asperger′s Syndrome, both by Tony Attwood.

Oh my goodness! What an amazing book! Full of insight and makes you really think about yourself as a child as well as your children. Amazing! Thank you.

All teaching staff in any setting should read this book. Even if you think you wont come across an Asperger child in your career, you will. All of a sudden the penny will drop. Essential reading. Fab for parents too, give a real insight into potential school issues and deeper understanding of how they see the world.

Suggested by the school psychologist. The book is informative with personal experiences of people who have aspergers syndrome. It highlights many issues that even non-aspergers people would have endured but it gives an insight to what is going on in the head of the aspergers person when they are up against certain situations. I did find some areas a bit dry ie: the terminology when describing the key definitions of aspergers!!!! Once I tuned into the text I got through it fairly quickly. Valuable for teachers/assistants/parents/employers to get their head around the internal conflicts that the individual is going through and how simple through away statements leave them confussed. It helps the reader understand how strange and confussing the world is for many people not just people with aspergers!!!

Excellent accessible book. Aimed at teachers, but it has proved the best book for research for a parent of a recently diagnosed child. Many revelations that ring very true. The best thing about it is that it looks at the subject from the child's point of view. There are many different children/adults stories, some pretty harrowing but very useful. It has really helped with talking to schools and educators and has a good intro by a leading expert in the field. It definitely helps you to find a window into how Asperger's children see the world and how we can help them. Also useful when talking to various professional types. If they have heard of it/read it/or rate it, they are generally OK. If not and they show little interest, you know there will be problems with them! I would strongly recommend it.

This book is a great insight into what life must be like for children with aspergers/autism in the school environment. It was an eye-opener for me working as a classroom assistant with an autistic child and helped me to understand him and his behaviour much better. A super read for me and teachers/classroom assistants should all read it!

Good book which describes the issues surrounding attending school with Asberger's syndrome. Well written and interesting. The book manages to discuss the subject without being too technical for a ley reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly enlightening read....
Reviewed in Canada on 25 June 2014
This book has been a truly enlightening read for me. Learning through the eyes and remembrances of over 25 "Aspies" exactly what was a cake walk and what was a road block during their educational experiences provides a wonderful insight into the core of their individually unique programming. Of course they are all different yet they seem to share startlingly similar characteristics in relation to language skills, learning mechanisms and interpersonal relationship challenges.

If you have someone close to you with an Autism Spectrum Disorder this book will help you understand why you are occasionally frustrated trying to reach and successfully interact with them. You will often find yourself shouting "Aha" (or perhaps, "Eureka") as you are presented with the perfectly understandable reason behind a particular exhibited behaviour that has been the source of friction and disruption in your relationship.

I would strongly recommend this book if you are an educator tasked with teaching an ASD child. Ms. Sainsbury's personal insights and the collected words of 25 of her peers will surely assist you in not only improving your skills with the ASD child, but instil you with tools that could be extremely helpful in coping with the vast array of social and learning abilities presented in any class of 20 to 30 young children at different stages of development. One size does not fit all.

The big take away from this wonderful book is that there does not have to be a right or wrong outcome when faced with a seemingly intractable problem. Both the Asberger child and the care giver/educator are very likely to be in possession of the "right" answer, they are merely both arriving at those answers while looking at the posed problem with an entirely different understanding of it's nature.

I read the wisdom in this book to suggest that it is the Input (presentation) portion of the problem solving exercise rather than the evaluation of the Output that requires the evaluator to utilise the exceptional guidance provided by Clare Sainsbury and her cohorts.

Thank you Ms. Sainsbury for this book.
