The birth of Peanuts

First in a series of twenty six volumes which collect all the strips ever published of the classic cartoon Peanuts. The exploits of Charlie Brown. Snoopy. And other classic characters.

This volume begins with an introduction by Garrison Keillor. Then follows 287 pages worth of all the Peanuts strips from 1950-1952. Although they are not individually dated as such, it does say down the bottom of the page the year and month they herald from.

You get three strips to a page. When the Sunday strips, which were full page ones, eventually appear, they have a page all to themselves.

Those used to Peanuts as it was for so many years when Schulz was in his stride will find the strips here a bit surprising by comparison. Since they herald from the start of the run, they are quite simplistic at times by comparsion. But when it began, he was learning as he went along, and it is quite fascinating to watch things slowly develop over the course of these first two years.

It begins with just four characters. Charlie Brown. Shermy. Patty. And Snoopy. Who acts like a normal dog and walks on all fours. At first it feels like a somewhat generic funny kids strip. But ever so steadily, characterisation starts to emerge. Charlie Brown gets his familiar look when the stripe appears on his shirt. Other character are introduced and become regulars.

It's a way in before the first sunday page appears. The strips steadily get funnier. Snoopy does eventually get a thought balloon or two, and it's quite startling when that first happens. And the crushings disappointments that Charlie Brown always endured arrive in due course.

As a whole they're not the strongest batch of Peanuts cartoons, but it's fascinating to watch the series develop over the course of these first two years. Once you've finished it, go back and read the first ones again, and you will be startled by how much the art comes along across the course of it.

After the strips there is a fascinating feature about the life and times of Charles M. Schulz. Followed by an excellent and almost thirty page interview with him from 1987. Then there's an index to the whole volume.

Not the best of these, but perhaps four stars for the strips and five stars for the book as a whole. But all in all, an essential start to an essential collection for fans and those interested in the medium.

The sweetest work of art ever conceived

Love it. I didn't know these very first comics, and it's impressive to see the characters grow up and develop to become the little persons I came to love so passionately. Schulz made something great.

An excellent debut, but not quite the Charlie Brown and Snoopy we grew to love

This is a great paperback collection, and for my taste much easier to read than the hardback version. Here are the very earliest Peanuts cartoons. They're good in their own right, but there are only hints here and there that the series would become the one that is loved across the globe as it evolved. The characters aren't set as we would recognise them (in how they're drawn or how they act). There's little continuity or clarity about who is whose sibling, and there are characters here that Schulz appears to have completely rethought later on - they look different, have different relationships with each other, and different behaviour patterns. Charlie Brown starts off as an average boy, the recurring "hero" of the cartoons, around whom most of the little plots revolve. Snoopy, though, is just his very small puppy, and looks more like a dog here than he later became (he's on all fours at all times, for one thing). We rarely see what he thinks, and he's mostly just there as a minor supporting character for Charlie Brown. It's not even entirely clear at first whose dog he is! There's very little of the almost surreal humour (like the later "World War 1 Flying Ace") that Snoopy came to specialise in. It's there in a very small way, just occasionally, as you can see Schulz trying this out for size in the odd strip, but more often the jokes and punchline here are quite pedestrian. There's little continuity or thematic repetition, and Charlie Brown doesn't have any of his later angst. You can see progression, though. The cartoons at the end of the collection are progressively better written than the earlier ones. What is fun is spotting all the "firsts": the first appearance of Snoopy, first mention of Snoopy's kennel, first appearance of Lucy, first surreal joke, first appearance of Schroeder, first baseball game, etc. I can't give this 5 stars as the later cartoons would virtually all be, as these aren't the best examples of Peanuts, but it's nonetheless fascinating, and a great read.

This is the first volume of Peanuts cartoons, and it shows. Its always interesting seeing how a cartoonist originally penned their creations. The early versions always seem clunky compared to the practiced efforts of later years.

The book itself is of a decent size, and very nice quality. It could become an heirloom if it wasn't for the fact that the pages are already well thumbed.

So, say hello to Charlie Brown, and a very small puppy!

Early work - and already great

Knowing that these were the very first 'Peanuts' strips, I was expecting mediocre humble beginnings before the strip blossomed and hit its stride. Happily, I was proved completely wrong - yes, the early art is slightly different than the familiar 'classic' strips, but it's still brilliantly done, and from the first page the strips are both hilarious and filled with great character work. Charlie Brown is the star from the outset, and intriguingly though beset by waves of depression he isn't the totally doomed loser of later years, with a great line in teasing and playing practical jokes on the other characters. The main supporting characters are the relatively obscure Shermy, Patty (no, not Peppermint Patty), Violet and of course Snoopy, who still looks like a puppy and isn't even Charlie Brown's dog here (he appears either to belong to Shermy or just be a stray). Later in the book baby versions of Schroeder, Lucy and Linus show up, and it's amazing to watch them slowly grow into the characters we all know and love. A handsomely produced book, filled with great art and humour - essential!
