Funny, wicked and informative. David Watkin was one of the World's great cinematographers. Ken Russell's The Devils, Mike Nicol's Catch 22 (even though the latest transfer to DVD is not good. No subtlety. You don’t have to drag the pedestal down to 0 and turn the white to 11), the Bedsitting room, I’m a Litter Basket (BFI have it in the BTF collection). I could go on. Discover his beautiful light for yourselves. Just mind the transfers.

David Watkin was a great enhancement to every production with which he was involved. The shame is that what lets this book down is production. Watkin was a complete professional; a pity he has been so ill served by the lack of professionalism in the making of this volume. The formatting is bizarre, the index nearly useless, and it is littered with typos and the sort of errors that a junior proof reader should have been able to catch. David loved books; the pity is that this volume is such a poor example of the craft of making books.
Watkin was a great enthusiast for gossip, and a lot of the appeal of this book is the behind the scenes stories of events on some great films. For anyone seriously interested in the art of lighting a picture this book is a great read. Covering his life from schooldays until just before he died of cancer one is given an insight into the thought processes and dedication of this master craftsman.
