Orson Welles at Work Hardcover – 4 Nov. 2007

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

Welles is one of the legendary film directors whose persona has been created through a myriad of myths and legends. Enfant terrible of American cinema, his groundbreaking entry into Hollywood with Citizen Kane propelled him to fame as a young prodigy and unfailing genius. Many studies to date have focused on this aspect of Welles, highlighting his clashes with film studios to paint a turbulent picture of an artist repressed by his producers. In this book, however, by returning to the original works and analysing the primary sources, the authors strip back the myths and rumours (many of which were created and fanned by Welles himself) to draw a realistic portrait of this most remarkable filmmaker at work. All of his works are discussed, with in depth analysis on key works and projects.

"Big, beautiful and scarily thorough: from his radio days to TV to barely sketched ideas, this covers Orson's entire career... A fascinating portrait."―Empire

5.0 out of 5 stars Going Back to the Welles
Reviewed in the United States on 23 May 2014
Many volumes have been written about Orson Welles' massive life and career, but this book, concentrating on his work as a film director, manages to provide new information and insight into the origins of each of Welles' features and the often baroque circumstances of their production, post-production and release. The writing is very good, making for an easy and entertaining read, and the black-and-white photos are plentiful and high quality. The authors' (or perhaps the translator's) technical knowledge occasionally appears a little thin, resulting in a few baffling passages, but their knowledge of Welles' life in film, both at the studios and as one of the first truly independent filmmakers, is vast, their research deep, and their analysis of his expressive use of image and sound excellent. Fans of Welles, a true and iconic American artist, will love this book, and are sure to want to revisit his films after reading it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Book described as Like New arrived in goop
Reviewed in the United States on 2 September 2020
I was extremely excited to find this somewhat rare book listed as Like New for a very reasonable price. Well, when it arrived, I found out why. Book was covered in goop and gunk, with the jacket having a nice thick coat of grease all over it. Had to wash my hands multiple times just from touching it. I am returning promptly. Very disappointed.

Meticulously researched, wonderfully illustrated investigation of Welles' working methods -- dispels many myths but reaffirms the greatness of Welles' achievements.
