Children's classic

Mezolith was the unexpected jewell in the DFC canon. My boys loved it from the off. The artwork is simply stunning (amazing in fact) and the stories are strange and dark - which really appeasl to my two Dr Who obessed boys. Very different to anything else in the DFC but its a classic. This book has broad appeal but its slightly dark tone would make it more accessible for children ages 8-9 and above. If you don't know what to give a child for Christmas or birthdays this would be a good start. I suppose its more of a boys book but I'm sure girl's would appreciate the artwork and especially the Swan Bride's storyline which I think is the best story in the book - although my boys prefer Raven. A winner - a classic.

If you only buy one graphic novel...

Mezolith is a brilliantly original story: a loving biography of the human race told at the personal level through one boy's eyes. And it captures the whole timeless marvel of humanity in that Poika, the hero, is simultaneously the latest of many generations of his people and at the same time a completely unique individual who is forming his own relationship with the universe, as we see in his charming connection with the bee that seems to become his particular totem, guide and rival.

Mezolith is the most important British graphic novel of the last twenty years. Personally I'm a huge fan of Watchmen, for example, but even a great comic like Watchmen or Sandman is only ever going to be understood by comics fans. The simple truth is that most comics leave most readers baffled, not only because they don't know how to read the medium but because the content doesn't engage them. That's not the case with Mezolith, which is a timeless, engaging and yet unsentimental tale that anybody and everybody can read and appreciate. It's not a book to put alongside Tintin, it's a book to put alongside Dickens. And by the way I'd better clarify that remark, which is not to deprecate Tintin (which, like Watchmen, I personally enjoy) but to emphasize how Mezolith manages to achieve the very rare feat, like Dickens, of combining literary worth, universal appeal and sheer entertainment value. It is most definitely not one of those self-consciously worthy graphic novels that tackle some "serious" intellectual or political subject in order to earn literary kudos. Its themes are serious and deep, but at the same time it is a hugely FUN read.

I should add, however, that in spite of having been published (in the UK anyway) as part of a series of comics for young children, Mezolith contains some daunting and powerful material that is far more suited for teenagers and adults. Ben Haggarty and Adam Brockbank have created a true masterpiece which is worth giving as a gift to any friend who appreciates the transformative power of great literature and who might have dismissed comics up till now as not being as valid a medium as any other.

Completely absorbing

I was given this by a friend, and started reading it one evening. I entered another world and found myself completely absorbed. The artwork is stunning and the story captivating. A wonderful piece of work.

Wonderful

I bought this book entirely for the artist, Adam Brockbank who is a favorite concept artist of mine (He worked on all the Harry Potter films) and really wanted to get his art in print. It's a beautifully illustrated book with a subtle, muted colour palette. The line work and character drawing is top notch; this is "old school" comic art, with the emphasis on quality and graphical excellence. The story is also engrossing, with more "fantasy" elements than I was expecting. Like the European albums, hardback cover on quality paper, excellent printing. Wonderful. The artist is currently working on a second book I hear.

Beautiful artwork, imaginative story

This book is a real pleasure, even just to browse through: really well crafted, atmospheric pictures that transport you into the ancient world. Each of the mini-stories leads you through the daily life and trials of a tribe and its characters as they grow, along with the mythological back-stories of the older, more enigmatic characters. In a simple way it delivers characters that you want to follow, stories that can sometimes blur the line between the real and the imagined, and artwork that draws you into this other realm. The cover says that this is Book One, so I hope there are more of these to come.

Great storyteller + great artist = magic in a book

Ben Haggerty has been a professional teller of traditional tales since the late 1980s. You can only see him perform live - what few video clips there are of him have been withdrawn and his audio recordings are only available to researchers of folk tales. So for him to write a graphic novel is a special event.

He, and the two other members of the Company of Storytellers, were commissioned around the turn of the Millenium to look into Stone Age stories. I saw them perform those stories at the Royal Festival Hall, in London. Although the stories were the possibly the oldest there are, they were unlike any other folk tales I've heard.

This novel draws on those stories, and I think, weaves them with other folk tales from Scotland and elsewhere. The 'swan bride' starts like a selkie (seal people) story but then moves on in a unique direction.

The book is for anyone 8 years upwards - equally for adults as for children.

The graphic images are great and are perfect for the book.

It will draw you in, take you to another place, and connect you to people who lived tens of thousands of years ago.

What a comic! By far the best I have read in years. Great artwork interesting stories wonderful world. Working wonderfully with what is known of the period to produce some fantastic fiction.

beutiful book
