One of the greatest Italian filmmakers, Federico Fellini (1920-1993) created such masterpieces as La Strada, La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, Juliet of the Spirits, Satyricon , and Amarcord. His prodigious body of work evokes Pirandello, existentialism, "the silence of God," as well as show business. Critics have accused him of being a charlatan, hypocrite, clown, and demon, and have hailed him as a magician, poet, genius, and prophet. Fellini on Fellini is a fascinating collection of his articles, interviews, essays, reminiscences, and table talk, carefully arranged to chart the progress of his life and work. There are boyhood memories of his hometown, Remini, and his highly improbable beginnings as a scriptwriter for Rossellini letters to Jesuit priests and Marxist critics defending his first international success, La Strada anecdotes and revelations about the making of La Dolca Vita, 8 1/2, and The Clowns and insights into all aspects of filmmaking. Here, Fellini reveals, as no one else can, a rich digest of his brilliant and controversial career.

This slim volume contains a collection of Fellini's writings over the years about cinema and life. Not all cineastes are brilliant writers but Fellini's skill with the pen is palpable from the first page. Here one can find astute and far-ranging reflections on his films along with vigorous and amusing answers to his critics. In one essay he tells us about the genesis of La Dolce Vita, in another he reflects (with incomparable erudition) on the history of clowns and circuses. And so on - there is a vast range of reference. Everything he touches is imbued with the same witty and kind-hearted modesty. I would say Fellini on Fellini is a classic to go on all film lovers' books shelves, along with those other indispensable memoirs by Bunuel, Kurosawa, and Bergman. Books such as these teach you more about the history and art of cinema than a library of worthy academic treatises.

3.0 out of 5 stars Warum hat Fellini Filme gemacht?
Reviewed in Germany on 28 August 2018
Vermutlich weil er sie den Interviewbänden vorzog. Die Zeit sollte man besser in die Re-Lektüre der Filme selber investieren. Dort habe ich mehr gelernt, als in diesem Band.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Maestro!
Reviewed in the United States on 12 January 2014
This book is a bible of sorts for the person who wants to live a different kind of life, one in which the imagination forever leads. You may learn to love mendacity. You may even decide that you are really a clown. Hopefully, you will want to watch Fellini movies. I read it once a year as a touchstone. Fellini is to us as Shakespeare was to the late Renaissance. Reading this book may change your life; don't say you weren't warned!

Come on, it's Fellini in his own words. What more could you want? This book consist of his essays, interviews and even responses to some critics who slammed his movies. A must for Fellini fans.
