Winner Take All: China's Race For Resources and What It Means For Us Paperback – 7 Feb. 2013
Purchase options and add-ons
Our planet's resources are running out. The media bombards us with constant warnings of impending shortages of fossil fuels, minerals, arable land, and water and the political Armageddon that will result as insatiable global demand far outstrips supply. But how true is this picture?
In Winner Take All, Dambisa Moyo cuts through the misconceptions and noise surrounding resource scarcity with a penetrating analysis of what really is at stake. China, Moyo reveals, has embarked on one of the greatest commodity rushes in history. Tracing its breathtaking quest for resources - from Africa to Latin America, North America to Europe - she examines the impact it is having on us all, and its profound implications for our future.

Product description
Review
Written to clarify important global questions, this book deserves a wide audience ― Kirkus Reviews
With Winner Take All, Dambisa Moyo offers a timely and provocative answer to two crucial questions: How are China's leaders rushing to meet their country's exploding demand for energy, and what does this mean for the rest of us? It's a recipe for conflict-and at a crucial moment for the future of the global economy -- Ian Bremmer, president of Eurasia Group and author of 'The End of the Free Market'
For anyone longing to make sense of tectonic, eco-political shifts occurring in the commodities market, Winner Takes All is a fascinating and important book. By focusing her razor-sharp mind on China's central role in the new commodities rush, Moyo sheds light on and makes sense of a profound and dramatic moment in our history. Her book is a must-read -- Peter Munk, Chairman and Founder, Barrick Gold Corporation
[Praise for How The West Was Lost] Moyo is a very serious lady indeed -- Dominic Lawson ― The Times
Moyo's diagnosis of the recent disasters in financial markets is succinct and sophisticated...I applaud her brave alarum -- Paul Collier ― The Observer

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 July 2015If you talk to anyone from Africa about geo-politics (I have), the subject of China's inviligation into the continent will eventually come up. Whether this is about relentlessly hyperproductive chicken farming or commodity mining, the overriding theme tends to be that China are moving in. Sometimes emotive words like 'rape' are used; others are more circumspect, others still are positive and use words like 'investment'. This book gives a useful perspective - and a lot of facts - to inform those debates. There's no question that China is a serious power in the world - although, they're still a long way away from the US - and with a population of the size they have, it's inevitable that they would want to stockpile resources. But even so, the scale at which they're working is really quite surprising. This isn't a page turner - I'm not sure Moyo has a future as a novelist - but it's an interesting, fact laden, and thought-provoking take on the next superpower that is well worth the investment.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 January 2013A fascinating look behind the scenes of China's race for resources across the world. The strength of the Chinese economy, and the concomitant vast appetite for natural resources had only just appeared on the radar a few years ago. The occasional newspaper report hinted at a quiet storm taking place in developing countries, with a state-controlled and directed Chinese 'invasion' all over the globe, focusing on acquiring the scarce and precious natural resources that will fuel the next economic leap forward. They have the focus and the financial muscle, and they aren't choosy about which regimes they work with - often they'll step in where Western countries and corporations won't, because of human rights situations etc.
Moyo lays out a compelling story, that is very timely.

PlaceholderReviewed in India on 21 May 20145.0 out of 5 stars A fact based disposition of one of the most striking truth of the century
Dambisa Moyo has a way to prove her point.
She brings up the eternal truth that at the end of day, all of us, small individual or big conglomerate, hunt for land and natural resources. She talks about the distribution of natural resources and how some nations are taking up the voyage towards securing the natural resources for their economic needs, China taking the lead.
Wished she could have written more about India, Middle East and South East Asia.
Highly recommended for those who want to understand the psycho-physics of the world better.

Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseDr. Dambisa Moyo describes the global impact of China's dominance with such detail that it's difficult to factually challenge some of her arguments. This book's title may tempt one to brush it off as one of a myriad of research papers written on China, specifically the doom associated with its global dominance. However, it is worth noting that Dr. Moyo touches on some of the challenges that have a global focus currently, such as food security, pollution etc; most of which have emanated from actions from well known super powers. An excellent read.
