Rage, a novel based on the successful video game by the same name from id Software, unfortunately fails to deliver what the game itself so masterfully has. The book claims to be based on the game, but it should be noted that it is loosely based.

The main character, Raine, is a man selected for a state of cryogenic suspension, to be re-awakened 100 years in the future to help ressurect mankind after it has been wiped out by the asteroid Apophis. Unfortunately, the world he rises to is nothing like what mankind had hoped for. A man with his own personal agenda has arisen earlier than everyone else and created a government known as the Authority, hell-bent on world domination.

The premise is good, the video game great, but the novel fails to bring that world to life. There is no depth to any of the characters, and while one might expect that from a video game, a novel should flesh out these characters. It does not. The action sequences were poorly described and there was a distinct lack of tension throughout the story.

The writer has missed a good opportunity to write what could have been one of the best post-apocalyptic stories of last year. For example, one of the most adrenalin-pumping sequences in the video game is a trek through the Dead City, while being hunted by mutants: the normal kind, slime ones, and monstrous ones. Rage, the novel, visits the Dead City for just one chapter. One chapter! And our "hero", Raine, has absolutely no problems completing this mission.

The book's ending is no better; it fails to provide a final confrontation with the big bad boss man, whose evil nature is only breifly touched upon. Really, in this book, there is no one to route for, and no one to hate.

If you're looking for an all-action exciting ride, then go out and buy the game -- the book, unfortunately, doesn't do it justice.

I dont expect great things from novels written to go with films or games. This one is decent enough, not too long, not too short, (perhaps an afternoons read,) keeps the pace up and generates a certain amount of anticipation for the game itself. Pretty much what you would expect Im sure.

The downside is that judging by the promotional material for the game itself, it would seem that the storyline for the book is essentially the same. Other recent games have used their tie-in novels a bit more wisely, to explore the background of the game without spoiling the main story. (ie cover events leading up to the game or perhaps tell the story of one of the other characters. For example, the Mass Effect, Dragon Age or Guild Wars 2 novels.)

As such I would have to say that whilst I can recommend the book, if you are the kind of person who likes to discover the story of a game yourself then you may want to wait a bit before reading this. (4 stars for the book as it was a bit better than average, lose 1 star for spoiling the games storyline.)

I'm not a keen reader but I do enjoy video-game novelizations.

I do realize that this game has not been released yet but since it's got Bethesda all over it, I can only assume that it will be awesome.
After reading this book I've got an image in my head of how i think the game is going to be and I really do hope that it maintains that.
It's a short book so the average reader will have it done in no time, that said; the story is brilliant.
I thoroughly recommend this to anyone who is interested in the game!

Oh dear. Never really thought books based on video games were a good idea and this is the first time I've read such a book simply because I'm really looking forward to the video game. This is writing by numbers at best, very simple to the point of perhaps being patrionizing and assuming that video gamers probably aren't smart enough to enjoy a good book thats well writen with a decent plot.....Wrong. Its very childishly written, which is fine if your a child and the plot and story line is predictable and frankly boring. Also the cover says " based on the critically aclaimed video game " ? The games not even out yet, not for nearly another two months. If the games anything like the book in terms of quality then it going to be a flop.
