This film opens with the roar and echo of a stadium concert, with Cooper dominating the shot as a craggy- voiced country singer.
His alcoholic bewilderment, post performance, leads him to Gaga’s drag club where she swoons the audience and Cooper with Le Vie En Rose; the film wastes no time in hooking the audience with its immersive intimacy and knock- out vocals from both Cooper and Gaga.
The direction is focused and crisp without padding out the narrative, it gets to the point of the intense love affair and their musical bond. Any back stories are dealt with sparingly yet with a clarifying punch.
The most intriguing aspect of this film is that Gaga plays a neophyte singer believably and Cooper plays a troubled rock super star, equivalently. The incredible soundtrack doesn’t overshadow the acting and the combination is electrifying.
Forget its predecessors, this film stands alone with its raw authenticity , it is a tour de force in every way ;heart wrenchingly beautiful and poignant .
Best film of the year.
