... I really wanted to love this album. Sweetener was the big comeback album we were waiting for, and the people who worked on it with her promised important topics and strong viewpoints... Nope. Every song [except Successful] is either about the end of a relationship, the start of the next one or how she's so great in bed, that you'll think you've been touched by God. Is that really the biggest and most important thing that she had to say to us?!
The three singles released before the album are definitely the strongest tracks on the album - and I wasn't keen on The Light Is Coming when it was released. Successful stands out for being lyrically unique to the album, and Sweetener stands out, mainly for being the title track. The clip Ariana keeps teasing on social media [the b&w one of her on a staircase] is of her singing Get Well Soon, so that stands out too. I only remember Blazed and Borderline as they feature other artists, not for them being particularly impressive. Teardrops and Pete Davidson are nothing but filler skits, so don't count in my book.
I'll be generous and go to three stars as half of the album stands out one way or the other, Ariana has fantastic vocals, and nothing stands out as being 'bad' or 'rubbish'. I think the main letdown on Sweetener is the lack of musical variety and the lack of catchy hooks - half of the songs blend into one big jumble, so I can't remember them five minutes after listening to the album.
Love this album! Have not really known much about her music until last year, and then as each single was released from this album i was amazed! I guess her longtime fans will love it, but new listeners like me should give it a chance. I’m 35 and I miss GOOD girly pop, like TLC, Madonna, Aaliyah, Girls Aloud and. Britney and XTina when they’re at their best. If you’re a pop lover who’s given up on current music, go play this and be in for a treat! Also, if you’re a fan of Pharrel and/or N*E*R*D give this a listen, Mr Williams has produced and co-written a lot of this album and he sounds amazing. It’s a fun album, on one hand some people will see it as a typical pop album, but it’s personal, open and very sweet (in a good way). Girl’s taken a risk, and wow it’s payed off!!!
I love Ariana, and admire her attitude and compassion given recent events. This album, like her others, is great, infectious and diverse. She has an unbeatable vocal range which is a pleasure to listen to. However, I have removed a star because, considering her young audience and followers, the topics of her songs and some of the language is pretty shocking. I'm not a prude but don't think this adds much to her music, and she should be more mindful of her target audience. Otherwise, very good album!
