I purchased this after making a massive overhaul/upgrade of my PC, and the hype around M.2 drives being the best thing since sliced bread. For read/write performance. Especially since I do music production, some video and photo editing--so am moving large files frequently, as well as read large sound libraries.
I understand that there are many variables that can affect read/write speeds.
I've installed this in a Gigabyte Aorus X470 Ultra Gaming Motherboard, with 32GB DDR4 3000Mhz CL15 RAM, R7 2700X and Gigabyte GTX 1080 8GB Windforce OC. It's in the first M.2 slot, which uses full PCIe 3.0 x4 bandwidth.
For benchmarking, I decided to pit it against a Samsung 850 Evo 500GB with RAPID Mode Enabled. For those who haven't used RAPID mode on Samsung SATA SSDs (840/850/860) before, it basically uses a small bit of RAM as a cache to boost read/write speeds of the SSD. Although, with RAPID mode, there's a chance of data loss. The 960 and 970 drives do not support this feature, and it's not necessary, and probably for the best.
Also, after getting my new shiny X470 mobo and R7 2700X, I decided to use my old HyperX 3K 240GB SSD and a Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD for a StoreMI config/setup...which similarly allows you to combine the speed of an SSD, the capacity of an HDD, with a small bit of RAM as a cache to boost read/write speeds.
Raw hardware performance, it's night and day, that's ultimately what matters. 5/5.
EDIT: Updated benchmarks with current firmware.
