Absolutely superb, 5 stars for Mark Lawrence
31 May 2018
In this, the second installment in the Ancestor series, Mark Lawrence builds upon the frankly superb story he started in Red Sister. The book continues to follow the novice Nona Grey as she progresses through her training at a rather unusual convent, learning how to become a living weapon.
I won't post any spoilers, suffice to say that I absolutely loved the story that Lawrence weaves. The setting is really interesting, and the second book uncovers new information about the world and origins whilst hinting at more.
There are similarities to Lawrence's first two trilogies (both 5* series as well, don't be shy, take the plunge with the Broken Empire series too then work your way to the Red Queen's War trilogy, as they are sequential series) in that the world has fallen from some significant technological age. In the first two trilogies that world was Earth of the future, in this one I don't think that is the case. It makes for a more interesting setting than the typical feudal/medieval trope.
I loved this book and cannot wait to revisit the Sweet Mercy abbey for the next instalment. I find myself hoping that this becomes a series that stretches beyond a trilogy, as I have enjoyed both this and Red Sister so much.
