This is an excellent album by Aled Jones. The duets work perfectly and it is very relaxing. Probably his best album yet. If you are a classical music fan would definitely recommend this album. Aled just keeps getting better and better.
One voice was released on April 1st 2016 and is a compilation of songs which were recorded by Aled when he was 15 but were never released, duets as the current aged Aled with his younger soprano voice, and solo recordings from the young and current Aled with his tenor vocals. The result is a beautiful album of contrasting harmonised voices singing great folk and classic songs.
Aled's current voice fits perfectly well with his boyish choir voice and these high and lower pitched voices make for really interesting listening, especially because the songs are so good. You really get caught up in the music with each song taking the listener on a different journey.
I saw Aled on his Cathedral tour in St.David's this year in May and when he asked the audience if anyone had his album (which made for a very diminished response) I was ashamed to admit I didn't. After being blown away by seeing him live for the first time, with his and his supporting act's performance that night being so stunning, I made it my mission to purchase the album ASAP.
I've been a fan of Aled's for years but it's the only album of his I own! I am generally not a big fan of classical music with vocals but I totally loved this album upon my first listen. It's such a cool concept to sing along with himself as a boy, and to finally release some of these songs which have been locked away for many years.
The album has 13 songs and features songs by Handel, Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten. Seven songs are duets with his younger self, three songs are current Aled solos, and three songs are young Aled solos. It's really poignant to listen to the contrast of a young Aled solo song with The plough boy, with it's youthful bouncy energy contrasting with the wonderful but mature Passing by with Aled's grown up voice.
Aled stays true to his Welsh roots with two Welsh language songs; the gorgeous Ar Hyd y nos (All through the night) and Dafydd y Garreg wen (David of the white rock). There are also Scottish songs with O Waly waly, and Ye banks and braes o' Bonnie Doon.
The album booklet has pictures of Aled presently, and younger pictures of him starting out in his career, which is a nice touch.
If you have heard any of these songs and enjoy them then I encourage you to buy this album because it is magic!
I thoroughly enjoy listening to every song on this CD. I'd forgotten how excellent Aled's voice was as a young boy, and these songs are enhanced by the harmony added by the adult Aled. The selection of music is varied from all the countries of the U.K. and from different periods. I especially enjoy 'The Rowan Tree', 'The Ash Grove' and 'Linden Lea', all of which I sang as a child at school. 'The Plough Boy' is a lovely, jolly song with the piccolo adding extra effervescence. The only disappointment to this CD is the lack of libretto as I would like to sing along with the song!
This is a brilliant album. The comparison between the 15 year old and 45 year old voices is tremendous. The tenor voice that he has today, might not be described as top class in comparison to other, professional singers, but he uses what he has very well to match the voices of his 15 year old counterpart. I had heard the album with someone who is a classical musician, who rates the album highly, and I have to agree with his opinion. The convenience of delivery via download is excellent, went well and within a couple of minutes I was able to extact the album and transfer it to my ipod and mobile device. Excellent.
Now this is a million miles away from my usual music choices; I adore Wagner, Richard Strauss, etc, etc.
Aled's boy soprano voice was enchanting and he's been one of the few to retain a good singing voice into adulthood. I'm very fussy about singers but love the tone and quality of his adult voice and think he's generally underrated. His two voices combined are a magical blend. Each time I heard snippets of this album on Classic fM, it made me stop whatever I was doing to listen and left me wanting to hear more. I bought the album and have listened to it again and again already and I'm still finding that certain passages still have the same effect on me. The voices blend perfectly, transporting me to another place and relaxing me like an aural massage!
