What's missng ? = more than you can read from the Ads.

External mics can be a pain, but for many "pro" recordings a must:- getting in close cuts out other noises. Only issue is the awkward connecting cable - or a very expensive radio-link.
HFG40 = a good buy for HD working, which is plenty good enough and saves buying a Super-PC to Edit. Two areas where I suspect it's not so good .... 1) built-in ND filter ( don't read there is anything ) and.... 2) Decent "Stills" mode. Similar-priced camcorders offer over 20Mpx images which means you can leave buying a Stills-camera ( and having a good Zoom, would be very expensive + heavy).... but Canon camcorders as well as most "Professional" Camcorders seem to miss this feature . . . perhaps they hoe I'll buy a DSLR + Lens-kit as well?
These TWO features should be addressed by most Camcorder descriptions - but Advertising Blurr serves only to confuse... I guess they don't want to say "we didn't think you need it"
Anyone buying an HD videocam in 2018, will have a need for very good images IMHO . . . so the ability to get shallow DoF and take serious Stills is right-up there with a second battery. . . . . comments here about the Canon charger is unacceptable - the purchase of a second battery should not be painful. Waht's good? - the G40 designers understood only SD-cards are acceptable nowadays.
