Captain Marvel is my second comic and I'm well and truly in love. Captain Marvel Volume 1 was my first introduction to the character Captain Marvel and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Whilst, at times, the wide range of characters and terminology confused me, I realise that this is just because I'm a newbie to comics and once I've read it a couple of times and I become more accustomed to the format of comics, I'm sure this won't be a problem. I absolutely loved the space aspect of this comic, along with the alien-like characters involved. I'll definitely be carrying on with the next volume as soon as I can.
Captain Marvel is not a superhero I am familiar with, but with a free Kindle Unlimited trial and an upcoming movie about her, I thought I should give it a try. Some really good artwork here, being slightly cartoony in nature but not too twee. Some good interaction with Guardians of the Galaxy. But in general, just a bit flimsy and dull. A lot of the book falls into Phantom Menace-esque international trade tariff discussions which take up quite a large proportion of the page count. I don't feel like this really shows off one of the most powerful superheroes in all their glory, rather being a strong independent woman sorting things out through political discussion and diplomacy before eventually resorting to her powers. While this was right for the story being told, I found it a boring one. I may not be the target market for this.
Carol Danvers is... Complicated. A powerful female superhero who has managed to inherit the mantle of a proud male superhero who was iconic in his own right and because of this I should feel... Differently about Carol. However, I feel as though Carol is just too weakly written in a comic book context and feeds more into the pushy almost bully like stereotype that neck beards everywhere hail as the end of days. Carol isn't likable - like at all - and she basically bullied everyone into her way of thinking. If she was a man she would be a dick and... In my eyes... you can be a dick regardless of gender. She starts an intergalactic incident just because and whilst it does end up as something bad and something the avenger would deal with in the end... What if it wasn't? What if Carol was wrong? To me Carol has never felt heroic and more of a zealot. Or just a brute when she has been a clever and refined character in the days when she was just Ms.Marvel. Oh well, at least we got Kamala out of her and she is amazing. So... Yeah.
