Found it more peaty flavoured than reviews suggest
6 January 2016
I bought this whilst on offer to enjoy the odd sip over Christmas, on the basis of the many reviews and the tasting notes suggesting this is a smooth malt with a soft warming honeyed flavour, with hints of vanilla and fruit.
Now l realise that everyone has a different palate, and taste can be affected by what else you have been eating or drinking prior to tasting.
I also admit l am not a major malt drinker, but there are some l have enjoyed in the past.
What l am not keen on are peaty/smokey flavoured whiskeys, but for me that has been the overwhelming taste having tried this Abelour 10 year old double cask a few times since purchasing.
Some people say that letting some of the alcohol evapourate off by letting the whiskey stand, or by drinking down the bottle can lessen the harsher flavours, and make it smoother to drink.
I can honestly say that this has made no difference to the flavour of this whiskey for me, and l will be giving the remaining half bottle plus to friends of mine who are not averse to the peaty flavoured malts.
Obviously this appears to have been a relatively inexpensive and enjoyable drop for many, but it's not for me, and if tempted to buy a malt again in future l would probably shell out more for a Balvenie Double Wood or similar which l know is more suited to my palate.
