Fine for newborn, awful for older baby.
on 21 July 2015
I was perfectly happy with this car seat when my daughter was newborn. Good safety ratings, looks nice enough, easy to use in car and on pushchair frame (Uppababy Vista), daughter seemed comfortable in it. But, now that she is older and bigger (six months, 75th centile for weight, 80th for height) I am starting to dislike it more and more. I could find very little guidance on when to remove the headhugger and wedge cushion but did so once she could hold her head steady and was starting to look uncomfortable with them in place. And that's when the problems began!
Firstly, even at their highest position, the shoulder straps are too low. If I tighten the harness as tight as it should be it absolutely crushes her shoulders. This is partly because of the way the clip at the bottom is designed to fold flat so it's constantly pulling the straps up and away from her body. Secondly, the angle she now sits at is too upright for a young baby, especially when used with the easyfit base which I have now removed from the car. It's fine when she's awake as she is happy sitting up and can hold her head up no problem. But if she falls asleep (which happens fairly often in the car) her head tends to tip right forwards so her chin is on her chest - a potential airway issue. If my husband is driving then I always sit in the back with her now to keep an eye on her. If driving alone I restrict myself to short journeys and have a mirror so I can see her (not great for keeping attention on the road!). Several times I have had to pull over to reposition her.
Perhaps I'm doing something wrong - though I have no idea what - as other people do not seem to have these problems. It also may be partly to do with the fact that my car seats are slightly angled and if they were flatter she would be in a more reclined position. (I mostly drive a 2014 VW polo but have had the same issues in a 2011 Ford Kuga.) Whatever it is, I would not recommend this car seat. I can't wait to move my daughter into the next seat up and would be reluctant to use this again, beyond the newborn stage, should I have another child.
