Virtuous but not entirely my thing
25 April 2012
Mr Hopkins has clearly had a long time to study & perfect his trade for this release, and it shows.
Here's a fellow most famous for acting, who has always wanted to compose music... and for a first grand outing I have to say it's very good. Not always 100% my style but certainly worth a lot of good words!
Perhaps not the epic debut I had personally expected. In fact it might be true to say Anthony's style largely understates itself. This is no bad thing, however; and dare I say it suggests even greater things to come from the big man.
"Composer" showcases what I see as an experiment in texture & colour and not a definitive work as such. Anthony is giving us (and himself) a taste here of what he's capable of. His arrangements are very floral; vocal, even playful but always incredibly intricate & clever to the point of subtlety.
Though the music itself isn't what I'd expected from Anthony Hopkins the actor, the impossible level of detail & attention thereto are products of the inimitable intelligence that I've always attributed to Anthony Hopkins the man.
On the strength of this, if & when a definitive work does arrive I truly believe it'll spell immortality for Mr Hopkins in a way no-one saw coming. In the meantime I'm eager to find out what else he's capable of!
In short; you might like it, you might not. There's only one solid way to find out! Me? I'm glad I bought it!
