This shows the vast variety of Queen's work & a few covers by other artists. If you don't like at least half this album you shouldn't be allowed to listed to music, there simply the best. Listen to Flash & I have to see the movie. Highlander's 2 tracks have same effect. As do ones with amazing video's "Great Pretender" & of course "Bohemian Rhapsody" perfect. Yes I want to watch Wayne's world & shake my head too much- if you don't know what I mean watch the film. We all need a bit of Freddie in our lives.
It's remarkable, when you think about it that Queen were about long enough to produce enough material for a 3 album set of music of "greatest hits". The first third, contains their earliest and, I suspect, their biggest hits. That said the second, and most of the third CD contains "typically Queenish" material of a good to high standard.
Overall I would recommend for everyone, but I suspect that those new to Queen would get the most out of the collection, as it would give them the definitive roadmap to their music.
After watching bohemian rhapsody I’ve rediscovered queen. I never quite realised at just how brilliant they are, and Freddie Mercury of course is something else, it’s so tragic that we’ll never hear him sing again, but this album is fantastic
The Platinum Collection is just what you need if you're not so much an avid fan of Queen, if you are you'll have all of the tracks already, is more for the person who just likes a bit of Mercury/May Magic from time to time. The compilation is a great mix of all the Queen songs you know (but perhaps didn't realise you knew) and love. There are also a few gems that I hadn't heard before.
Queen were known for their amazing live performances and stage presence. This compilation attempts to capture and re-live some of that magic by including some live tracks. It's these tracks that really show Freddie for the superlative showman and entertainer that he most certainly was.
In terms of the quality of the sound and the conversion to mp3. I really have no complaints. The sound has very low noise and hiss accompanied by good clarity in the soft parts. In the louder more rocky sections the sound in punchy and rich. There is a little evidence of compression in parts but that is a really minor niggle, and actually if you're listening on headphones or in the car a little compression helps avoid the constant volume adjustments in response to the dynamics of the track (think Radio 3 classical music for uncompressed sound if you're not sure what I'm talking about).
Al in all, this is a great compilation and a must-have if you want some Queen in your collection but don't have much/any at the moment. If you're an avid fan, you'll have much of this already - but, it might still be worth the download for the live material which really does show Queen off for the stadium-might and entertainment for which they were deservedly known.
I'm not sure why I am leaving a review for this. What can I say . . Freddie Murcury was a genius. I bought this in a lazy attempt to get some of the old music I used to enjoy. After a morning listening to Queen I was blown away by the sheer genius of the man and his band. Even the tracks I used to think I didn't like came out strong, confident and talented.
Amazon as usual provide first class service. The case was broken in several places and I decided it would eventually annoy me. A replacement was shipped the very next day and postage refunded.
This is one of the great collections of all time, I think everyone should own this CD set. I'm a fan of all sorts of music from pop, dance and soul, and certainly wouldn't say I'm a big rock fan, but this is still up there with the best album I own. It's quite breathtaking the depth of the band's repertoire from the real rocky tracks to the incredible ballads featuring Freddie's unmistakable voice. It's a tragedy that he isn't still alive today. You tend to forget just how good they were, then you play this album, and you don't need to say anything more. If you don't like at least 10 tracks on this album you don't have a soul. Buy it!
