White noise will drive you mad!
on 28 February 2012
My initial impressions of this amp were favourable..... well packaged, nice box and it looked well built.
Upon close inspection I noticed that the control plate had tiny scratches and that some of the "control pots" were stiff and crunchy in operation.
I then turned it on.....
The hiss/white noise this thing spits out is daft, you can't use it it comfortably with headphones on at all. It also has another noise problem - Google "Vox Valvetronix snare drum hiss" and read the endless complaints on the forums.
When you increase the power control the hiss/white gets a lot worse, I started using mine with the power at a minimum......... but I didn't buy a 20 Watt amp (will go to 30 Watt) to run at 2-5 Watts.
edit - Yes I know all amps will make some sort of hiss, but this one is off the scale....
Check this thread as well (I know it says VT40+ but the problem is acress the range of models) - [...]
I tried everything I could with the unit, tried the "noise reduction" facility but it made no difference.
In the end I had the unit replaced assuming it was a one off fault, but the replacement was just as bad. The build quality is not up to much either - on my replacement unit the speaker rattled, the cheap jack plug (very cheap and nasty) used to crackle and the handle was loose.
In the end I returned it again and got a replacement from another manufacturer that was a similar price, has fantastic build quality and no hiss/white noise at all.
