This masterpiece of hip hop direct from the streets of Havana could easily have come from the suburbs of New York. Even to those who do not speak Spanish, this album is a clear fore-runner for a new style of hip hop entering the music world. Although released over a year ago, the band's style is still fresh and new, mixing the classic 50s Cuban beat of bands featured in films such as Bueno Vista Social Club with catchy Spanish rap. A good example of this is the song 537 C.U.B.A., which features "Chanchan" by Maximo Francisco Repilado Munoz. In my opinion, the best song on the album has to be "Mistica" - beginning with the gentle Spanish guitar, building up to a chorus of voices and percussion. Each of the songs is backed by piano or guitar rhythms as well as a strong percussion line. It is hard to imagine why this band have not rocketed to success in a nation where hip hop and rap are becoming so popular. Perhaps it is the fact that most people have never heard of a Cuban rap group before, or imagined that they would like one. If you like good rhythms, good tunes and good vibes, this is certainly the album for you.
