Waterproof only till the first washing -- thereafter unusable
on 15 January 2015
WARNING: The review below reflects my initial impression of the product, which was very good. A month later the product is found to be impractical. A tiny tag attached to it instructs the dog owner to re-wax it after washing. This is puzzling - do dog owners have the means to put wax on fabrics? And indeed, after a very gentle hand-washing with mild soap and no tumble drying, the coat turned to be an efficient rain-water sponge. Soaked with water after two or three walks in the rain, the water penetrated it down to the lining. It became heavy, very unpleasant to the dog, and actually unusable.
The coat is beautiful, and the quality of materials is fine, better than in any other dog coat I've seen. The inner lining is also made of very good materials. Tested in heavy showers, the coat proves to be absolutely waterproof. The straps at the backside (which go under the hind legs, and cannot be seen in the picture) hold the coat in place better than with some other coats I had in the past. There are two minor issues, though: In general, Velcro straps gradually become with time less sticky. With this coat, after several weeks, they still hold OK, but somewhat tend to loosen. Also, since my dog has a harness rather than a collar, I had to have a buttonhole made in the appropriate place for fastening the strap (some 8 cm further back from the dog's neck). I had to have this done with other coats in the past - makers of dog coats seem not to take this need into account. In sum, despite these small minuses, I warmly recommend this excellent raincoat - and to the term "warmly" my dog also gives his consent.
