I was waiting excitedly for this new Deliciously Ella book to be released and it has not disappointed. I have been blown away by the recipes and am so excited about all the things that I can cook from it. Every recipe has a photo and it is divided into really handy sections -Breakfast, Salads, Falafel,Burger and Dips etc.
I am not vegan, or even vegetarian, but I love food and cooking, and, like many people, I have become increasingly interested in incorporating more plant based meals into my daily life and that of my family. We now eat vegan food at least a couple of times a week, but what is fantastic is that these recipes can also sit really easily alongside meat or dairy, if you so choose. The salads and spiced peanut sweet potatoes seem particularly adaptable to sit alongside grilled chicken or halloumi.
I love the way that Ella uses layers and combinations of dishes in her recipes, so a meal could be a few dishes put together giving taste and texture variation. For example, last night we had the Rainbow Salad with the Smoky Aubergine Dip on the side. I cannot express how truly delicious this was! None of the dip was left at all (the bowl scraped clean) and a small amount of the salad went in the fridge, which I am looking forward to for lunch today! Also, it was so easy to put together. I had baked the aubergine earlier in the day, but everything else I did in around half an hour before eating. It was just a question of making sure that I had all of the lovely fresh ingredients in the house.
Having dips on the side is a revelation for me! I'm looking forward to trying the Creamy Artichoke and Edameme Dip soon and the Sri Lankan Curry tonight!
Over all I think this book is fantastic, particularly if you want to increase you veg intake. It has enlightened me as to the variations possible in vegan/plant based cooking. I previously thought of nut roasts and boring, dreary dishes. Deliciously Ella has set me straight. I think my family will be much healthier with this book in our lives (Ella states that just 27% of the UK population is eating their five-a-day and I totally agree that we need to make fruit and veg seem delicious, exciting and easy). Even my children are eating more veg thanks to this book and other of Ella's recipes.
I am not totally sure about the sweet stuff, as I am not vegan, I'm not sure that I will try baking without eggs and butter, but never say never! I really do like the look of her Mango and Coconut Flapjacks though, as they have so much less sugar in them and I think my children will like them.
I have one other of Deliciously Ella's books, which I have used a fair amount and enjoyed, but this seems like it must be her best yet. I very rarely write reviews, so the fact that I have chosn to today I think speaks volumes. Basically I would highly recommend this book!
