The Shining made me think of the 'sometimes' incomprehensible communication between the members of a family. Purity is born with a human being; and life makes it fade away. But purity provides some sort of a sixth sense to the 'pure' beings. A child, for instance. So feels something, Jack Torrance's son Danny; he has something shines into himself as a warning; which he couldn't manage to express. This only, could make the movie thrilling. But of course, that was not the only thing.
Stanley Kubrick's 'neat' style and the excellent way of the light used, presents the story in a sterile vision which reminded me a kind of North-European Black and White 'Dr. Caligari' atmosphere.
